Beat the Heat with some Cool Prizes!

Summer time is a chance to refine your practice and to make new friends. At Cape Ann Power Yoga we’re taking a little more time in classes to work alignment, to move toward new poses, and to bring in some classical yoga philosophy.

To keep us all motivated we’ve got a challenge for you! In the month of August:

practice 15 times, get a CAPY water bottle

practice 25 times, get a CAPY tank or T

practice 31 times, get a CAPY yogi toes!

**All practices to be done at CAPY. Prizes DO accumulate, if you come 31 times you get all three!  Students keep track of their classes in a notebook at the studio (don’t fib, karma will get you if you do!)

“Simply being on the water demands a certain level of presence. No matter how comfortable you feel out here, Mother Ocean never ceases to amaze, trick and humble us. She is our teacher. I can guide my students through a class but she is truly the leader.”

It’s hotter than Hell, sunny, beautiful, and SUMMER in Gloucester!

We had an absolute blast at the Fishtown Horribles Parade and fireworks on the 3rd and Rockport Fireman’s Association Parade and bonfire on the 4th. I extend to all of the volunteers, organizations, musicians, and public safety officials a sincere thank you for making these events such a rousing fun success year after year.

Cape Ann is such a great place to visit, live, work, raise a family, and run a business. Not just because of the beaches, the woods, the dining, the museums, the arts, the sunrises over Thacher and the sunsets over Ipswich Bay. There is something far more powerful than any of that. It is the people.

uhh

Like us on Facebook and see all of YOUR awesome parade photos here!

The people of Cape Ann are industrious, hardy, enthusiastic, and part of one community. As you can imagine that made it difficult to pick just one winner. But thankfully there was one parade pose that stood out above the rest.

I was walking down Centennial and had stopped to chat with a bright eyed group of young folks about what power yoga is and why all of our classes are open to all levels and only $10, when this sweet little lady came briskly walking towards me and pretty much grabbed me by the collar to tell me that she had a yoga pose to share with us. Before I knew it she threw her hands down on the pavement and pressed her leg up into the air with the ease and grace of a ballerina.

Yoga isn’t about twisting yourself into a pretzel. It’s about making a habit, a practice of breathing consciously, moving mindfully, strengthening the areas in which you are weak, and letting go of that which you don’t need: physically, mentally, and spiritually. It’s about embracing each day, each moment, and each breath with the gravity to appreciate it and the lightheartedness to enjoy it. Spending just 1 minute with Lou I could see that her “practice” of yoga extends to every facet of her life. It was humbling and a great reminder of what’s important in life.

gram

Thank you, Lou for sharing yourself with us, to your family for sharing Lou with us, and again to everybody who tried a pose, submitted a photo, and participated as part of our community. Cape Ann Power Yoga wouldn’t be anything without all of you.

World Class Yoga Teacher Nicki Doane Coming to Gloucester!

World Class Yoga Teacher Nicki Doane Coming to Gloucester!

We’re honored to be hosting a teacher who we consider to be one of the greatest living yoga teachers to our home town. What makes her great? Well, for one – if she read this she’d probably take umbrage at the fact that we’re calling her one of the greatest living yoga teachers. But that’s part of what makes Nicki great.

As students and teachers of this practice, and now owners of a studio – Elizabeth and I make a sincere point of going and taking class and learning from the best. Most of the time it’s pretty good, sometimes it would have been better to save the money and the trip, and even more rarely than that – it exceeds every expectation. Without fail – that’s what you get from Nicki Doane.

nd.jpg

There’s no smoke and mirrors and you won’t learn how to do a fancy handstand or a cool party trick you can post up on Facebook. What makes Nicki great is that when you come to learn from her, it isn’t about her – it’s about the practice. That’s what she’s all about. And that’s what we’re all about.

Devotion to yoga and the desire to share with and give back to the world are what motivate the teaching of Maya Yoga with Nicki Doane. Yoga is spirit in action, and as Nicki teaches, she inspires people to find a place of spirit inside themselves, recognizing the profound connection between the self and spirit.

Nicki has been studying yoga in India for years and has been deeply influenced by the teachings of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar. Her unique approach to Vinyasa yoga strengthens all aspects of your being through dynamic structural alignment, conscious breathing, and practical yogic philosophy; helping students find the deeper life of yoga. Nicki strives to teach each student that yoga is about being fully present in the moment and discovering that we are truly all One:

One Love, One People, One Heart, One Destination – Our Higher Self.

Exploring How a Sustainable Practice Creates a Sustainable Life
In the world as it stands today, it is becoming increasingly obvious that Sustainability is no longer an option for us all but a much needed Reality. How to create that in our own lives and yoga practice is what Vinyasa Fusion has to offer. The Maya Yoga approach is intent on serving the Individual student. Nicki’s style encourages students to discover their true self and let the practice be the teacher, showing you the tools to learn for yourself what is right for you at any given moment. Vinyasa Fusion combines the breath and flow of Vinyasa style yoga with alignment principles which support safety, postural integrity, and personal awareness in the practice. Since our practice is a representation of our lives, we will explore how this sustainable approach to our asana practice helps us to create and sustain balance in our lives. We invite you to explore Nicki’s unique approach to Vinyasa yoga because it will strengthen all aspects of your being through dynamic structural alignment, conscious breathing, and practical yogic philosophy.

On Wednesday, July 13 Nicki will be with us here in Gloucester at Cape Ann Power Yoga.

This class will sell out so we encourage you to sign up now.

This will not be a hot class.

Yoga at 5:30 in the morning? Yeah, right!

Why on Earth would you want to get up at the crack’a’dawn to go and work hard, push your limits, and sweat before 6AM? Well have you ever noticed how old folks get up at like 4 in the morning? Maybe they’re on to something. Maybe they realize that this life is short but sweet for certain, and it’s up to us to take advantage of every breath. And, if healthy, wealthy, and wise is just an alarm clock away……. we’ve got a spot for you to get on that project.

IMG_20160519_105020

This is a man who doesn’t need to “practice” his balance but he does anyway. You’ll see him on his mat at 5:30 a few days a week.

Our 5:30am weekday classes are taught by Johnna, Kim, and Atlee. These women shine energy and enthusiasm; they are happy to be there and it rubs off on everyone! The 5:30 crew is a great little community – a regular group of friendly people who join together each weekday morning. They’re in a sun drenched room in full view of the elements, the rising sun, and a peek out to the harbor and the Paint Factory. They practice energetic breathing, stretching, moving, balancing, and, most importantly, benevolence and generosity of spirit. And, even more importantly, there’s a spot in that room for YOU.

When class gets out at 6:30 you feel awesome. You’re clear headed and ready to be proactive instead of being reactive. You can get a coffee at Lone Gull, go for a swim at your favorite beach or quarry, or head home to take a shower and make a healthy breakfast. For that magical time before the majority of New England wakes up, the day is yours. And if you practice 5 times a week – the world is yours.

Elizabeth goes to Washington!

Elizabeth goes to Washington!

50

This past weekend Cape Ann Power Yoga was was represented in the nation’s capital as Elizabeth taught a 20 hour assisting training. Fifty DC yoga teachers came together at Down Dog Yoga for a full weekend of assisting, functional anatomy, teaching methodology, and spirituality. As you can see, it was a big hit!

Not only has Elizabeth worked with hundreds of teachers over the years, but she is coming up on having taught 10,000 hours of yoga. This woman has unparalleled experience and we’re incredibly fortunate to have her here in Gloucester leading and coaching our team of teachers every day at CAPY.

We’re proud of you, E!

“Being more peaceful and passive is not what will help us overcome the obstacles of modern life. We need a raging dharma to help us face the raging challenges that we face as modern people making money, raising families, and living our vision in the world.”

Cape Ann Power Yoga is thrilled to announce that we’re hosting meditation and provocative discussion with David H. Wagner this Thursday, May 19 from 6-7:30.

This is a discussion and meditation practice so we encourage you to bring a bolster or comfortable seat. If you want to practice before hand we will have our regularly scheduled 4:30-5:45 all levels power yoga class.

Post Graduate Program for Yoga Teachers

“Let the practice speak for itself” – Baron Baptiste

You’ll notice our schedule doesn’t list who is teaching what class. Why is that?

It’s because we believe in giving you space for your own growth. Like dining in a fine restaurant, we believe that your attention should be on your own experience, not on the staff. We keep it simple, strong, and no frills. You know that whatever class you can get to will give you a consistently excellent practice. That isn’t by accident – it’s by design, and it works.

“Let the students have their practice” – Baron Baptiste

At CAPY our teaching team is dedicated to leading a time tested practice, to inspiring you, and to supporting you in your growth on the mat. Sometimes we bring in new poses, or a new little sequence, but mostly we give you the space to measure your own progress in a familiar flow. Teachers are only human and it can be quite a challenge to rein in our personalities and to keep our eyes on the prize of a clean flow. But, ultimately we are only messengers, and our mission is to keep that message clear.

If you want to be a successful yoga teacher – not a popular teacher, that’s different, but a SUCCESSFUL one – you have to get brave and get yourself out of the way.

At Cape Ann Power Yoga we have developed a program to support both experienced and novice teachers in finding that space in their teaching. Our Post Graduate Program will benefit teachers of all levels. Teaching yoga these days can be a lonely and competitive experience; we are offering a haven from all that. This is an opportunity to talk about teaching, to hear what works and what doesn’t, to mature your own teaching, and to enjoy all this in a non competitive environment.

Post Graduate Program

All participants will have an opportunity to teach the Thursday night 7:30-8:30 class at CAPY with the guidance of Hayley Haberman. After the class Hayley will give supportive and educational feedback for the benefit of the whole group. Elizabeth will lead three Wednesday night trainings during the program.

  • Experienced teachers can enjoy community and conversation in a positive atmosphere.
  • Newer teachers will continue to strengthen their skills and hone their listening.
  • Recent graduates have an opportunity to test their wings in a supportive setting.
  • 21 CEU for maintaining your Yoga Alliance registration.

Go to our website to see the nuts and bolts, email us with any questions, and then sign up!

The program starts June 1 and is limited to 12 participants.
