This program and its collaborative committee which Sander is a key pre-hospital partner is setting policy not only in the Commonwealth but leading the Nation in an effort to directly impact patient outcomes by improving stroke care from the time of call to 911 through discharge of the patient to their home. Please see the attached Press Release and picture from the award ceremony.
The Department is very proud and fortunate to have Sander representing not only the Gloucester Fire Department but pre-hospital EMS care providers as a critical partner in the patient care continuum for stroke victims.
Best regards,
Eric L. Smith
Fire Chief
City of Gloucester Fire Department
Firefighter/EMS Coordinator Sander Schultz received the 2015 Coverdell EMS Collaborative Star Award from the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). This award recognizes one EMS coordinator who has provided outstanding leadership to the Coverdell EMS Collaborative.
The Massachusetts Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program relies on shared learning to raise the quality of care for stroke patients by EMS agencies EMS Coordinator Schultz is a leader dedicated to providing exceptional care, and committed to sharing his expertise with his Coverdell EMS Collaborative colleagues.
“The Star Award was given to EMS Coordinator Schultz, is recognition of his exceptional leadership in stroke care at over many years,” said Fire Chief Eric Smith, “We’re grateful the Massachusetts Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program has provided this opportunity for Sander to share his knowledge, experience and passion with other Primary Stroke Service hospitals.”

Knowing the key signs and symptoms of stroke and calling 9-1-1 immediately can save a life. The F.A.S.T. acronym is an easy way to remember:
• Face: Does the face look uneven? Ask the person to smile
• Arm: Does one arm drift down? Ask the person to raise both arms
• Speech: Does the speech sound strange? Ask the person to repeat a phrase
• Time: If you observe these symptoms, call 9-1-1

Addison Gilbert Announces $150,000 Challenge Grant
The Addison Gilbert Society, a division of Addison Gilbert Hospital, received a $150,000 challenge from Gloucester residents Mollie and John Byrnes, inviting the community to join them in support of the brand new Cardiology Suite that opened this past spring.
“Addison Gilbert Hospital is committed to providing our patients with expanded, high-quality cardiac care conveniently located under one roof,” said Cindy Cafasso Donaldson, Vice President, Addison Gilbert Hospital. “We are grateful to the Byrnes family for offering this challenge, as this new Cardiology Suite offers the opportunity for a transformational change in how our Cape Ann patients can access needed care. Through the Addison Gilbert Society, residents can help invest in the next generation of care right here at Addison Gilbert Hospital. ”
The Byrnes family has been utilizing the services at Addison Gilbert Hospital since John was 5-years-old when he broke his arm after he fell out of an apple tree. They continued using the hospital for their children and have always appreciated the high quality care they have received at home in Gloucester. They offered this challenge to support a cardiology unit that has been an important part of the couple’s lives.
Both John and Mollie have a history of heart disease in their family, so supporting a service that has been so critical in their lives was an easy decision.
“We are pleased to support the new Cardiology Suite at Addison Gilbert Hospital,” said Mollie and John Byrnes. “It’s so important for the community to have cardiac services close to home. We hope others in Gloucester appreciate the value of services like these and help us ensure that they remain in of our community.”
This modern cardiology suite is located adjacent to the main entrance of the hospital. The new suite has prominent visibility and expanded access, easing cardiology visits for patients and their family members. It includes two new physician offices; two well-equipped patient exam rooms; an easy-to-navigate registration area; plus a spacious, serene patient and family waiting room. By co-locating the Cardiology Suite within the walls of Addison Gilbert Hospital, patients can receive a broad continuum of cardiology services all under one roof for efficient and exceptional care.
“Here on Cape Ann, we have a population at high-risk for cardiac disease,” said Michael Arsenian, MD, cardiologist. “These patients deserve high-quality care as close to home as possible. We do not want to add to the burden of logistical challenges to weak, tired or stressed patients and their family members. This new Cardiology Suite will avoid that: Our patients will be able to receive the range of cardiology services they need — without delay and all right here at Addison Gilbert Hospital.”
The Addison Gilbert Society will be honoring John and Mollie Byrnes on July 16 at its Gloucester Harbor fundraising cruise benefiting cardiology care.

Local Business Owner Reopens Photoshop Fred Bodin received cancer treatment at Addison Gilbert Hospital
For more than 40 years, photography has been Fred Bodin’s life. The Rockport resident started as a freelancer before getting regular work at local colleges, newspapers and magazines. Eventually he opened his own classic photography shop – Bodin Historic Photo – in downtown Gloucester.
“It’s like having a hobby, but I get paid for it,” said Bodin, who has run his Gloucester shop for nearly two decades.
But for 10 months last year, from January to October, Bodin’s shop was dark. There was no developing films and no interacting with customers. Instead, Bodin was at Addison Gilbert Hospital receiving cancer treatment.
In January 2014, Bodin was unable to walk and was taken to Addison Gilbert Hospital. There he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer.
“When Fred first came in, he was pretty sick,” said Joanne Gibbs, RN. “Cancer cells can infiltrate other areas of your body, but he was relieved to be treated close to his home.”
“Just the word ‘cancer’ scares the willies out of you,” Bodin said. “I was confused and in disbelief that this could be happening to me.”
But after the initial shock wore off, Bodin found solace turning back to his camera. Lying in his hospital bed, Bodin could still indulge his passion.
“Even though I was limited to what was in my room, I never stopped taking pictures,” Bodin said.
Bodin received chemotherapy and physical therapy through Addison Gilbert and Beverly Hospital as his care team worked to get him back to his passion.
“He has a great love for this town and his community,” Gibbs said. “His photos really capture Cape Ann. He promotes local artists in his windows and I believe Fred makes the most of every day.”
And now, a year after his diagnosis, Bodin has returned to his Gloucester shop, continuing to enjoy his hobby.
“It’s great to be back at work,” Bodin said. “I wanted to come back; I knew I still had the skills.”

You have the key to your heart health. February has arrived…roaring in like a Lion…with the heart of a Patriots player. Ok, I had to throw in the football reference. It is a month of hearts, roses and romance…all very important to us all…nobody deserves to be loved more than you.
Most importantly, the American Heart Association would like to remind us that heart disease is on the rise and is the #1 killer of women…above all kinds of cancer combined. Even if your New Year’s resolutions have fizzled out, please resolve to make at least one lifestyle improvement each month. In this way you can mindfully make them a part of your life and keep them there.
May we suggest these: taking a brisk 30-minute walk 3x per week(increasing to 5X), check your cholesterol levels, reduce TV watching after 7 pm, consume only water or decaf tea after 6pm, be in bed and ready to sleep on or before 10pm. Studies have shown that your sleep from 10pm-2am is physically restorative, while your sleep from 2-6am is neurologically restorative…(your brain, etc.) We are here to support you in any way we can.

It’s time to get back out into the sun! Discoveries have shown that vitamin D from the sun has amazing weight loss properties. Actually, some of these extra pounds we have packed on may not be totally our fault. Many of us are actually vitamin D deficient. Blood tests are available that can answer this question. Another tough obstacle is that if we try to supplement vitamin D, it is a fat-soluble vitamin and gets stuck in our fat stores! Vitamin D supplements are available in D2 (most common) and D3. D2 is a plant-based form and processes too quickly to be helpful. D3 is the form our bodies naturally make from the sunshine and lasts much longer in the bloodstream.(try Life Extension Vitamin D3…or Natrol vitamin D3…check with your doctor) Take them with food as the bile acids enhance D absorption.
Other healthy side effects of Vitamin D: Reduces: osteoporosis risk, diabetes risk, heart disease risk, respiratory infections, blood pressure, joint pain, cancer risk and the winter blahs…;-)

Just for fun, I will leave you with this for this evening. Providing these feathered comedians with feeders, perches and food has provided me with more than a few moments of delight. I will warn you that taking some peaceful moments to watch them flit about and interact with one another can be addicting. So far we have collected 3 feeders, a suet cage and I am searching for covered platforms for the bigger ones to snack comfortably. I sincerely suggest that you give this a try if you like to smile or laugh out loud…bring your coffee along…you will feel all the tension of the day melt away.
Please look for our new website which will be online later in March with new programs and events and regular classes. Thanks for joining us! Good night and good health.
Well Hello! Welcome to 2015 (Year of 8) and the year of the Goat. We are very excited to see this year unfold and I hope you will join us. The Goat year, which begins Feb. 19th is all about peace, tranquility, mending fences and seeking out loving spiritual persuits. Folks will find themselves taking a bit more time to think things through…brains over braun if you will.
The 8 is a balanced number and brings and encourages us to look more closely at our lives and provide more balance around work, family, outdoor activities, our physical health, spiritual lives and community contributions. It is about accomplishments, power, inner strength, self-empowerment and personal successes. Moreover, this is the year for self-realization ladies and gentlemen. Find out who you are and let that shine! Are you a guest in your own life story? Have you been under the influence of others and their opinions as to who and what you are? This is the year that things change for all of us.

Promise to be kind to yourself:
1. Do something loving for yourself each day.
2. Tell yourself “I love you” each day
3. Speak kindly to yourself
4. Write down something you love about yourself each day
Massaaaage...just the sound of it makes me relax and smile to myself. We all know massage work as a favorite part of our spa experiences, but perhaps you don’t know of its many health benefits. Stress has become an integral part of all of our lives…but did you know that it routinely causes physical pain in our bodies as a result? Stress and tension go hand-in-hand.
Getting those tense and painful tissues calm and relaxed again offers many health benefits such as lowered blood pressure, better sleep, intestinal health, increased metabolism and circulation, aids in digestion and weight loss, restores range of motion, reduces scar tissue from injury, enhances ability to focus, reduces or eliminates headaches, reduces inflammation of some arthritus and carpal tunnel issues, diminishes symptoms of depression, reduces the anxiety and confusion in Altzheimers patiences and strengthens your immune system…and creates a general sense of well-being. From there we usually make other positive choices for ourselves as well.
Call Lin at 978-852-6228 to see what massage can do for you. Massage specials available through March 8th. Ask for the “I Love Me” special offers.
(gift certificates are available to keep the savings going!)
