B.K.S. Iyengar as a boy amid his fellow yoga students. He started yoga at a young age and the work cured him of many serious ailments.

Come, bring your kids to practice with you at

Cape Ann Power Yoga!

All the time students are asking us if they can bring their kids to yoga…..the answer is YES!

As a general rule, by 13 most kids are able to take a power yoga class. We’ve had younger kids who are engaged and used to being coached, they do just fine. Our classes are 60, 75, or 90 minutes. We just ask that your kids be ready to focus and follow directions for that period of time. They certainly don’t have to do all of the poses perfectly, and they can take breaks whenever they need to.

Basically, if your child is respectful, likes to have fun, and can take direction from a fun and engaging coach they are invited to come and practice with us at any one of our classes.

It’s an easy, fun, and affordable (all of our classes are just $10 all of the time) way to spend time with your child in a peaceful, structured, and judgement free environment.

stretch

The practice we teach is “Meditation in Motion” where we keep moving, breathing, and advancing through a series of poses. By focusing our attention on one breath and one movement at a time – any thoughts, worries, or distractions that you walk into class with fade away into the background and you leave class feeling strong, calm, and confident.

Bryan Kest is a popular yoga teacher who often talks about how a yoga practice relates to your role as a parent. He suggests that despite our best intentions, our children don’t always listen to us and do what we tell them to – but they do become the people that we are through the example we set for them. Think of your own parents: did you always take their advice and do what they told you to do? I know I didn’t. But as you grow older – can you see that you have taken on some of their mannerisms, habits, and worldviews? That, I have done.

baz

On the first day of each of my daughters’ lives I held them up like Mufasa and told them:

“In this life you will be strong and have good manners.”

Sounds really great, right? Good for me – I’m going to be the world’s greatest dad…

Well by now I’ve spent a couple of years with the little critters and as blessed as I am it isn’t all sunny days on Ipswich Bay. They’ve seen me put off personal improvements, they’ve seen me be short tempered and unfair, and they’ve seen me be less than patient. The proclamation I made that they would be stronger and better people than me, my parents, and generations before me is all for naught if I don’t live and breathe that example every day.

I don’t get to my yoga mat to practice nearly as often as I should, but one thing that I know for sure is that the time I spend on my mat is an investment in Fletcher and Hunter’s future. It’s time spent practicing being clear headed, benevolent, grateful, and connected to my community. It is time spent cultivating the habits and manners that I want to pass on to my children.

All students under 18 must have a parent or guardian come in to the studio to meet us and get entered into our system. Once a minor has been entered into our system students

16-18 can come and practice on their own whenever they want,

14-16 can get dropped off and picked up at the studio in person by a parent or guardian,

13 and under will please have a parent or guardian stay and take class with them.

If you can – you should really come and practice with your kids as much as possible. At the least they’ll have put down their phone for 60 minutes and just as importantly, you will have too.

If you’re looking for yoga specifically for kids, tweens, and teens we highly recommend Katy O’Brien Dagle of Peace Kids Yoga and our friends at Treetop Yoga Studio

Our teaching team has vast experience working with and coaching kids and teens. We love the freshness and enthusiasm they bring to a yoga class and look forward to seeing them on the mat.

CAPY teachers are also available to work with teams or private groups. Please email us so  we can make a plan that meets your needs.

Making Space for Possibilities

Making Space for Possibilities

dreams

It was a little over a year ago when Elizabeth and I bundled up the girls and took our dog Speck up into the woods of Lanesville. We walked up past Steel Derrick and down to the end of Bearskin Neck. We stopped at Brothers’ Brew for coffee and doughnuts before heading back up into the woods and to our home in Downtown Lanesville. As often as we can we like to take a walk like this – stretch our legs, exercise the dogs, and expose our daughters to the beauty that surrounds us. (Brothers’ doughnuts are a nice bonus, too)

bsn

Speck, David, and Fletcher DeAngelis

Something was different about this walk though. As I stepped out onto the sidewalk Elizabeth let me know, “David, It’s time for us to open our own yoga studio.”

We had been talking about it for years. In fact, our very first conversation the night we met at the Madfish years ago we learned that we had three things in common. We both worked in the horse industry, our lives had both been transformed through yoga, and if we weren’t at the barn or in the studio – the only place in the world we wanted to be was on the water. You could say that it was fate, and I believe it was.

44533_1585270393189_7083956_n

Now back to our walk in the woods. We talked about everything that we wanted in our studio. From class times, teachers, building materials to workshops, training, our role in our community here on Cape Ann and also in the greater yoga community at large. For the first time we had a crystal clear picture of what we were looking to create. There were a few important things that we took away from that long walk on a warm January day.

We needed to create a clean, beautiful, and simple space. The type of space where we would want to practice that’s free from distractions, making it easier for students to turn their attention inward.

We wanted to be in the heart of Downtown Gloucester. Lore has it that one time someone asked Gandhi why he wasn’t up in the mountains praying and being with God. He replied, “God is here, in the City, in the people.” What good is enlightenment if you keep it to yourself up in the hills? We wanted to be in the heart of the city, the excitement, and the bustle – that’s where the people are, and that’s where we wanted to be.

Finally after some back and forth we determined that we would do everything in our power to make every class just $10 all the time.We would rather strive to reach more people and make a little less money than keep our community limited to those who have an extra $200 a month to spend on yoga.

We got home and started searching for a place to open our new studio. We looked at everything that was available or about to become available in Gloucester. We looked high and low, from finished studio spaces, to restaurants with kitchens, and everything in between before finally one frigid afternoon we walked into what had been an accountants office in Brown’s Mall.

IMG_1099IMG_1096.JPG

It had desks and carpets, a drop ceiling above it, and didn’t look anything like a yoga studio.

IMG_1092

But it had giant windows to let in natural light and heat with a view of the Paint Factory. It had high finished ceilings up above the hideous drop ceiling, a location right in the heart of downtown, and an airy atrium that would allow people to meet, chat, and easily segue with a new friend from the studio and into a coffee shop or restaurant. Most exciting was the fact that while the heat wasn’t even on and while the temperature outside was 14°, it was lovely and in the 70’s inside the sunlit unit. We really liked that : )

We took the leap and signed a lease. Almost every night for a whole summer when Elizabeth got home from teaching the four of us (Fletcher and Hunter too!) would head in to the studio to demolish, build, bless, and clean our space. There is blood, sweat, and tears from every one of us in this studio. It was worth every Redbull, every missed perfect day on the boat, and every lost hour of sleep.

IMG_1057

It was well worth the effort.

At first we were a little concerned that we didn’t have a parking lot and people might not like that. But for the most part people are happy to find and pay for a spot downtown if it means that they can take great yoga class for just $10. Plus – if you walk or bike to class, why should you have to pay a high price for class to subsidize parking for people who do drive to class?

Every 10x you walk, bike, or carpool to class you get a free class!

It’s like seventy five cents to park for most of our classes between 9 and 5 Monday through Saturday which is only about half of the classes on our schedule anyway. So yea if you have to pay to park it really costs you $10.75 or $11 to practice. Still a lot less expensive than almost every yoga class anywhere.

change

If you don’t have change in your car we always have a change bowl on the desk that we’re happy to let you borrow from.

We didn’t spring for the parking lot however we do know that it is extremely important to have a nice floor. You spend  a lot of time in contact with the floor in a yoga class – so for us that meant we had to have a real solid wood floor. You’ll notice that we picked a light blonde color for the floor so that you can see any grossness that collects on it. A darker floor hides the dirt, hair, and grime that can accumulate if you don’t wash every square inch of it multiple times every day like we do. We didn’t want that. We have light colors so you can see just how clean our studio is. Go ahead – take a close look at at our floor and let us know if you see any filth. According to some surveys the most important attribute people are looking for in a yoga studio is cleanliness – and we strive for that at every opportunity. Plus, it’s just the right thing to do.

mlk

The room is free of furniture and props, piles or places for dust. It is a clean, open, airy, sunlit space – the type of space where you can do some serious work.

We’ve been open for six months now. Every day more people are taking a leap of faith and trying the power yoga that Elizabeth and I so sincerely believe in. More people are coming back and making a regular habit of this life changing practice.

Our students aren’t just losing weight, but worries, ailments, and all types of things that aren’t suiting them anymore.

Our students aren’t just gaining flexibility, but confidence, poise, strength and a connection to their own inherent wisdom.

Our students aren’t just making do. They are making changes, making friends, making habits, and making space for possibilities.

Come and join us. We didn’t haphazardly open “another yoga studio in an already saturated market”. In fact with the continual growing popularity of yoga and people realizing how easy it is to incorporate a regular yoga practice into your life – we believe the market is ripe. We intentionally created a space to meet the unmet needs of the hardworking people of Gloucester. A clean space for learning, growth, community, and fun – affordable and accessible to all.

Give us a try – I’m confident that even if you discover that hot power yoga isn’t for you, your time in class will be well spent in the company of healthy people who are actively working to make themselves feel and be better.

What have you got to lose?

It’s just ten bucks.

And who knows what’s possible…

Spring Ahead in Life

Spring Ahead in Life

How’s that for a corny title? Haha.

Seriously though – the deep cold has broke, and spring is here. As New Englanders that means it’s time for us to get to work. Clean up the yard, the garage, the basement, the attic.

The average American home has 300,000 items in it. So much of that is crap we just don’t need anymore. Let it go. All of those things that you’ve been holding on to, “just in case”? Not only taking up space, but your time and energy as well. Moving them. Cleaning them. Worrying about them. Sell it. Donate it. Give it to your neighbors. Throw it out. Get a fresh start.

trash

That Zodiac in your backyard that is entirely de-laminated? Garbage.

The same is true for your spirit’s home – your body. Clear out the clutter this spring. A hot yoga practice is like opening the attic windows and turning on a fan. It’s like pressure washing the garage floor. It’s like taking a barney bag and filling it with all of that moldy and broken luggage that you inherited 20 years ago from your ex-wife’s uncle. Get rid of that shit. Make space for something new.

How do you do that? Well you could stop drinking, and smoking, and eating so much red meat. You could cut out all processed foods, start going to church, or temple, and start running 5 miles a day. You could commit to reading every day, volunteering somewhere in the community every week, and trying to be nicer to your co-worker who you really think is an idiot.

Yes. All of those things are good to do and if you did any one of those you would probably see a dramatic change in your life. But we’re not asking you to do any of those things. Change can be hard. Especially if it’s worthwhile change, it can be really surprisingly challenging. All we propose you do is take the first step. If you’ve never taken a Hot Power Yoga class before – commit to trying it out this week. We have classes all day and every day, and they are always all levels and just $10.

If you used to do yoga, but haven’t gone in a while, or you practice regularly but are looking for some inspiration – kickstart your practice and come take a Master Class with  Norm Brzycki on Sunday, March 20 from 9-10:30. As always – JUST $10.

If you have a regular yoga practice but maybe you know that a regular hot power yoga practice isn’t for you – you can still come and be a part of our community by participating in our quarterly

To head into Spring – we have the great pleasure of being lead through our 108 Sun Saluations by our students currently participating in our Teacher Training program. They are a really intelligent and committed group and the type of people you’ll be happy to spend time with.

Schedule Changes

It turns our there is a high demand for high quality, affordable, hot power yoga in Gloucester. We now offer early morning and mid-morning classes 7 days a week, and Noon classes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We have classes all day, every day, for all levels, and always just $10. double

Just what is a “Double”?

2 yoga classes in 1 day. (We recommend back to back)

Why?

You know that feeling you get when you walk out of a hot power yoga class? Like your body, mind, and soul have all been run through a washing machine? Your head is clear, you’re healthy, and free from any discomfort? Imagine feeling twice as good.

Is it safe?

Yes. In fact it’s a lot better for you than eating white sugar or drinking cocktails.

How do I enter in the drawing for a Month Unlimited?

Just come and take two classes in one day, any day in the month of February. Let the teacher or check in person know that you’ve doubled down and you will be entered in to the drawing.

Is it possible to double down my double down?

Yes! Check in on facebook (photos are a huge plus) at Cape Ann Power Yoga and a note about how awesome you feel having just doubled down and your entry in to the drawing will be doubled down. Also every day that you do a double your name will be entered again.

You know how good and open that last down dog of the practice feels? It’s entirely different from the one you walk in with. When you do two classes back to back – you pick right up where you left off in the first one. Especially if you’re new to hot power yoga or have never experienced a “Double Down” before, we sincerely want you to give this a try, now. We’re confident that you will leave feeling better than you have in years.

The Roots of $10 Yoga.

The Roots of $10 Yoga.

How much does it cost to take a yoga class on the North Shore? About $15.

So why is class $10 at

Cape Ann Power Yoga?

Over 15 years ago when Elizabeth started practicing yoga,

it cost

$10.

$10 made it affordable for her to drive into Cambridge to practice with Baron Baptiste. And practice a lot. Practice so much that when Baron told Elizabeth that he needed another teacher, and that it was going to be her – she couldn’t refuse.

All because of $10 yoga.
baronb

Brilliant Yoga Guy – Baron Baptiste

Fast forward a couple of years and Elizabeth is traveling to Mexico, and Hawaii, and Montana to train other people how to teach yoga. She helped to run events, retreats, and trainings all over the world to people who wanted to perform at the highest level.

All because of $10 yoga.

Fast forward a couple of more years and in now addition to teaching at the Baptiste studios in Boston, Elizabeth wanted to bring this powerful practice to the people on our side of The Bridge. A group of friends started gathering in a living room and that grew into sharing Baptiste Power Yoga at studios in Gloucester, Beverly, and Salem. From that humble living room to the inception of Treetop and the rise of Empower Elizabeth  has been a leader of health and wellness on Cape Ann for over a decade.

We set out to build a studio where regardless of who you are, how much money you have, or how much you know about yoga: you can walk in off the street any day of the week and pay just $10 to take a class with a teacher who is actively trained and coached by one of the most qualified teacher trainers in New England.

What is important to us, what we want our daughters to grow up around – is a community of healthy, happy, and clear headed people. We believe the simplest and most immediate way we can help contribute to that is to make this practice that has helped to shape our lives available to as many of our friends and neighbors as possible, by offering class for just $10.

More people are taking the leap every day. Tired of feeling sick and tired – our friends and neighbors are choosing to spend their time in a clean and bright space. They are choosing to be warm and to sweat, to push themselves and to propel forward in life and in health. Most importantly they are choosing to spend their time in the company of people who feel the same way. Come and see what we’re about.

It’s only $10.
