Each month a local charity is designated to receive a portion of the proceeds. Using ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’ to select which charity to team with, the first step being – Basic Physiological Needs (Air, Water, Food, Shelter.) The steps to ‘Realizing One’s Full Potential’ –
Charities we have partnered with include – Open Door Food Pantry, Beverly Boot Straps, (January,) Wellspring House (February,) Action Inc. (March,) Cape Ann Animal Aid (April,) SeniorCare, Inc. (May,) Relay for Life, Cape Ann (June,) Reid’s Ride (July,) and for August – Grace Center, Inc.
Grace Center Inc. in Gloucester does more than provide food, shelter, healthcare, and transportation. Grace Center Inc. was the recent recipient of a grant from Awesome Gloucester for their innovative art therapy project. At Awesome Gloucester’s ‘pitch night,’ I saw and heard first-hand how Grace Center, Inc. not only provides basic needs, but also opportunities that help people climb Maslow’s ladder to self-actualization and vowed to commit our August Reiki Share to help their project.
Join us and help raise money for this important cause while enjoying some ‘peace, comfort and calm’ at the August 4th Community Reiki Share!
‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’ – Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist noted that before a person can achieve ‘self-actualization’ (the need to be good, to be fully alive and to find meaning in life,) basic needs must first be met (food, shelter, security, a sense of belongingness.)
A portion of August’s ‘Reiki Share’ will be donated to Grace Center, Inc, in appreciation for all they do to help those in need.
What is Reiki – ‘Reiki (ray-kee) Ryoho’ is the healing method/art that began in Japan in 1922. Reiki, offered through light touch and without manipulation of tissue, is generally considered to be safe. https://nccih.nih.gov/health/reiki/introduction.htm. A growing number of hospitals incorporate Reiki as part of Integrative Therapies, offering Reiki before/after surgery and in the cancer treatment setting. https://nccih.nih.gov/health/decisions/consideringcam.htm While more research is needed to show effectiveness for treatment for certain conditions, preliminary studies of Reiki have demonstrated ‘decreased anxiety.’ Reiki generally creates a calming, relaxing experience.
Dreamtime Wellness™ Reiki Shares/Clinics are offered in a ‘group setting’ as an affordable way for people to receive a Reiki Session. Monthly Reiki Shares are available ‘First Tuesdays’ at the Manchester Community Center, 40 Beach Street (Harbor Point,) Manchester-by-the-Sea. Conveniently located next to the MBTA train station. 5:15 – 8:15 pm. New Date – Beginning October 21st, Monthly Reiki Clinics will be offered ‘Third Wednesdays’ at Lahey Hospital Outpatient Danvers as part of the Pain Management Center’s Integrative Therapies. 480 Maple Ave. Danvers, MA. 5:30 – 7:30 pm. (Note: Due to sabbatical, there will be no Reiki Clinic at Lahey Danvers in August or September 2015.)
Join us August 4th at the ‘Community Reiki Share,’ and help raise money for Gloucester’s Grace Center, Inc.
** Let us know if you have a charity that would like to partner with us for future Community Reiki Shares .**
To learn more about Reiki and other therapies offered in ‘Integrative Oncology’ (incorporating complementary therapies with conventional medicine as supportive care and symptom management,) here are some links to the National Institutes of Health/National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health – www. nccih.nih.gov and for specific articles –http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3863498/ https://nccih.nih.gov/health/reiki/introduction.htm#effects. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21998438. More rigorous study of Reiki is needed, but preliminary studies indicate that Reiki may be helpful for decreasing pain and anxiety in the cancer treatment setting.
For nine years, I was employed as the RN/Reiki Provider at the North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) and Mass General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Centers. Patients receiving Integrative Therapies during cancer treatment report these treatments help them “feel better,” “cope better,” and some reported “a greater sense of ‘hope.”
Private Reiki Sessions and Reiki Training are also available through Dreamtime Wellness™ (Offering Reiki in Healthcare and Hospitals Since 1999. Teaching Traditional (Western) Reiki since 2000. Teaching Japanese Komyo Reiki since 2012.)
