Spring Ahead in Life

Spring Ahead in Life

How’s that for a corny title? Haha.

Seriously though – the deep cold has broke, and spring is here. As New Englanders that means it’s time for us to get to work. Clean up the yard, the garage, the basement, the attic.

The average American home has 300,000 items in it. So much of that is crap we just don’t need anymore. Let it go. All of those things that you’ve been holding on to, “just in case”? Not only taking up space, but your time and energy as well. Moving them. Cleaning them. Worrying about them. Sell it. Donate it. Give it to your neighbors. Throw it out. Get a fresh start.

trash

That Zodiac in your backyard that is entirely de-laminated? Garbage.

The same is true for your spirit’s home – your body. Clear out the clutter this spring. A hot yoga practice is like opening the attic windows and turning on a fan. It’s like pressure washing the garage floor. It’s like taking a barney bag and filling it with all of that moldy and broken luggage that you inherited 20 years ago from your ex-wife’s uncle. Get rid of that shit. Make space for something new.

How do you do that? Well you could stop drinking, and smoking, and eating so much red meat. You could cut out all processed foods, start going to church, or temple, and start running 5 miles a day. You could commit to reading every day, volunteering somewhere in the community every week, and trying to be nicer to your co-worker who you really think is an idiot.

Yes. All of those things are good to do and if you did any one of those you would probably see a dramatic change in your life. But we’re not asking you to do any of those things. Change can be hard. Especially if it’s worthwhile change, it can be really surprisingly challenging. All we propose you do is take the first step. If you’ve never taken a Hot Power Yoga class before – commit to trying it out this week. We have classes all day and every day, and they are always all levels and just $10.

If you used to do yoga, but haven’t gone in a while, or you practice regularly but are looking for some inspiration – kickstart your practice and come take a Master Class with  Norm Brzycki on Sunday, March 20 from 9-10:30. As always – JUST $10.

Reiki for a Cause: Family Promise North Shore Boston and More

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Reiki for a Cause – Community Reiki Shares are held ‘first Tuesdays. Each month, a charity is selected to receive a portion of the proceeds (net proceeds up to 100%.) Charities that have been selected through the years have included those on Cape Ann (Cape Ann Animal Aid, Wellspring, SeniorCare Inc. Open Door,) the North Shore (Beverly Bootstraps, Reid’s Ride,) individuals and families in need, and charitable causes abroad.

This month’s designee is Family Promise North Shore Boston. Hear what our Reiki Colleague, Carol B had to say about Family Promise –

“Family Promise North Shore Boston is a nonprofit interfaith hospitality network that provides temporary shelter, meals, hospitality, and case management for families experiencing homelessness on the North Shore.
Family Promise FPNSB-about250
Family Promise North Shore Boston began serving homeless families in May of 2013. They bring together existing community resources and volunteers in order to further their mission of housing families, keeping families together, and helping them get back on their feet. There currently are thirteen local churches who for 4 weeks each year open their doors and provide a place to stay, food and warm hospitality.
In addition to the dedicated staff who work with families around locating affordable housing, finding jobs, budgeting resources, and parenting skills, there are about 50 volunteers each week who stay overnight with the guests, play with the children, and open their hearts in support of these families.
Each person truly makes difference and the giving and receiving from the heart goes both ways.”   ~ Carol B. of Family Promise North Shore Boston

Tuesday. March 1st – Stop by for a Session of Reiki and help fund charitable causes, or stop by to donate to local causes that interest you.
Manchester Community Center. 40 Beach St.  5:15 – 8:15 pm.
What is Reiki – Reiki (ray-kee) is a hands-on (or non-touch for those that prefer) Japanese healing method/art. During a session, recipients are fully clothed and can lie down or sit for their sessions. Preliminary search indicates that a session of Reiki can promote relaxation and potentially decrease stress, increase calm, and improve comfort. More information on Reiki and other integrative therapies can be found at the National Center Complementary and Integrative Health (www.nccih.gov.) Not to take the place of conventional medicine, Reiki is offered in hospitals and other healthcare settings, as supportive care for patients undergoing cancer treatment, pain management, and before and after surgery.
Contact me for more information or to schedule a session or training. ‘Introduction to Reiki’ lectures are available, offering continuing education (ceu’s) for nurses, social workers and case managers.
Best in health,   Karen

Pathways’ Family Enrichment Program is seeking men and women to participate in the parent mentor program. from Panic to Powerful – Surviving Cancer Program Re-Visited

IMG_2172Cancer Coach and Cancer Survivor, Laurie Geary, will give another presentation Tuesday, February 23rd, from 1-3pm, at the Rose Baker Senior Center in Gloucester.
Due to the extremely positive reception of the first presentation,  “From Panic to Powerful,” given in December, Laurie is offering the program again to cancer survivors and/or their caretakers.  If there is enough interest, the program will be scheduled once a month.
The “Panic to Powerful” program was developed by The Cancer Journey, the first cancer coach training company in the U.S.  Laurie, a professional life coach for more than 20 years, and a long term cancer suvivor herself, decided to be trained and certified by The Cancer Journey.  She now wants to focus her coaching and training on helping others deal with a devastating cancer diagnosis.
The goals of this monthly program will be to provide ongoing emotional support, as well as to teach techniques and tools, developed by The Cancer Journey, to provide educational and informational support.  Newcomers will be welcome each month; participants who attended the first program are encouraged to return.  Preregistration is appreciated.
A recent pilot study by The Cancer Journey proved significant overall improvement in cancer patient-perceived physical, emotional, spiritual, and hope status. (see Pilot Study below).  Laurie plans to share the tools used in this pilot study with the participants of the Panic to Powerful program.
Pilot Study to determine the effectiveness of Cancer Coaching/Training
Numerous studies have shown a link between emotional
support and improved clinical outcomes in cancer care.
face-to-face group sessions. The Cancer Journey™ embarked on a pilot study to test patient-perceived physical and emotional status with the
programmatic support of Cancer Journey Coaching.
32 participants enrolled in the study. Study participants
self-identified as patients, survivors and caregivers. 21were assigned to the coaching group to receive a combination of face-to-face group and one-on-one telecoaching over a 12-week period. 11 study participants were assigned to the control group and received no face-to-face or tele-coaching for the same 12-week period. 18 trained cancer coaches were leveraged in the study to provide tele-coaching. Two expert coaches provided the
face-to-face group sessions.
A survey was administered to active study participants as well as the control group. The survey assessed perceived Physical, Emotional, Spiritual and Hope (PESH) status as well as nine other factors: Family, Friendships, Intimate Relationships, Work, Education, Recreation, Spirituality,
Community and Physical Health.
The same survey was administered midway through the session, and at the end of the 12-week session.
Conclusions:
Participants in the active study group showed a greater overall improvement in each of the measured aspects of perceived physical, emotional, spiritual and hope status.
Physical      Emotional    Spirtual      Hope
Active Participant
Improvement                14.7%        19.4%        22.4%        18.8%
