Unfortunately, the holidays are not always a joyful time for everyone. According to one survey by the American Psychological Association (APA), people may experience mixed emotions and increased stress during the holidays.

Sleep apnea was recently mentioned by Joey on the Good Morning Gloucester podcast.  Joey shared his personal struggle as he recently tried to adjust to wearing a sleep apnea mask and joked good naturedly about how the mask can interfere with “sexy time.” I thought this a good opportunity to help increase awareness about sleep apnea risk factors, potential negative effects on health, and possible treatments.

The CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) mask shown here looks a bit like a medieval torture device, yet can have life-saving benefits.

Sleep Apnea a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Loud snort or choking sound often signifies breathing has begun again. Sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed. (National Institutes of Health.) More than 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. (American Association of Sleep Apnea.)

Types of Sleep Apnea – The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA.) This most often occurs in people who are overweight but can also occur in with enlarged tonsils and deviated septum.

Central sleep apnea is less common. This disorder occurs if the area of your brain that controls your breathing doesn’t send the correct signals to your breathing muscles. As a result, you’ll make no effort to breathe for brief periods.

Central sleep apnea is more common in people who have certain medical conditions or use certain medicines. Central sleep apnea can occur alone or with obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring is not typical with central sleep apnea.

Reiki for Relaxation, Comfort and Calm – Reiki (ray-kee) will offered to residents at Golden Living Center Gloucester. Tuesday, February 21st.  2 pm – 3:30 pm. 
Golden Living Residents can sign up through the Activities Department. Family members and health care agents can sign up loved ones unable to sign themselves up (Alzheimer’s, dementia, post-stroke, or other cognitive issues.) Attention is paid to comfortsafety, hygiene and confidentiality.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Reiki is considered generally safe and has the potential benefits of relief of stress and anxietyimproved comfort and increased calm.

Having worked in cardiac medical/surgical intensive care units, I know all too well the dire effects of heart disease. There has been progress made in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Thankfully, people are living longer, healthier lives.

But the Fact Remains, Heart Disease is the #1 Cause of Death for Men and Women. (Deaths from cancer, a close second.)

Education for prevention, symptom awareness, early intervention and treatment of heart disease helps save lives. Healthy lifestyle management and decreased cardiac risk factors lead to healthier hearts and lives for All.

Do You Need Reasons to Stop Smoking? I know I did. Once there were more reasons to stop than to continue smoking, my choice became clear. Hiding from my nieces and nephews so I could smoke. Seeing my niece at the age of 4 mimic me smoking. Then, in my late 30’s I began to notice physical changes – changes in my skin, decreased circulation, decreased endurance, huffing and puffing walking up stairs. A chronic cough. Getting more colds and bronchitis, especially in the winter. The disgusting smell on my hair, my skin, my clothes, my breath. Nasty taste. The cost. Being outside a party, by myself and seeing everyone else inside having fun. I realized, I was missing out on life.

What are Your REASONS to STOP? “My health” is the #1 reason people tell me they want to stop smoking. Your HEALTH is an excellent reason to make positive lifestyle changes.

Cigarette Smoking Causes:

LUNG CANCER – Cigarette smoking is the # Cause of Lung Cancer (80-90%)

  • Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States.
  • 1 out of 4 Cancer Deaths are from lung cancer.
  • More people die each year from lung cancer than colon, prostate and breast cancer combined
  • The rate of lung cancer in men has dropped 32% for men, but risen 94% for women

OTHER CANCERS. Smoking causes cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, cervix, colon, and rectum, as well as acute myeloid leukemia.

INFLAMMATION and IMPAIRED IMMUNE FUNCTION – Making you more at risk of illness, including colds, cancers and heart disease.

HEART DISEASE – Cigarette smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease by itself. When it acts with other factors, it greatly increases risk. Smoking increases blood pressure, decreases exercise tolerance and increases the tendency for blood to clot. (American Heart Association.)

Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment Can Save Lives.

The most important thing you can do to lower your lung cancer risk is to quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. If you smoke, ask your doctor about your risks, screening and how to stop smoking.

Decrease Risk Factors –

  • Stop Smoking (Best thing you can do is ‘never start.’ )
  • Avoid exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Avoid exposure to radon* and other chemicals
  • Eat healthy, balanced meals with a variety of fruits and vegetables.
  • Exercise regularly. (Ask your doctor for recommendations.)

*Have your home tested for radon – Contact your local public health department or the American Lung Society for information on radon testing. More information on Radon Here.

‘Stop Smoking’ Today. Help is Available – Tobacco use and nicotine addiction is complex. Stopping smoking may require a comprehensive, collaborative approach. Electronic cigarettes and vaporizers contain nicotine, the addictive component in cigarettes.

Reiki for a Cause – Community Reiki Shares are held ‘first Tuesdays. Each month, a charity is selected to receive a portion of the proceeds (net proceeds up to 100%.) Charities that have been selected through the years have included those on Cape Ann (Cape Ann Animal Aid, Wellspring, SeniorCare Inc. Open Door,) the North Shore (Beverly Bootstraps, Reid’s Ride,) individuals and families in need, and charitable causes abroad.

This month’s designee is Family Promise North Shore Boston. Hear what our Reiki Colleague, Carol B had to say about Family Promise

“Family Promise North Shore Boston is a nonprofit interfaith hospitality network that provides temporary shelter, meals, hospitality, and case management for families experiencing homelessness on the North Shore.

Family Promise North Shore Boston began serving homeless families in May of 2013. They bring together existing community resources and volunteers in order to further their mission of housing families, keeping families together, and helping them get back on their feet. There currently are thirteen local churches who for 4 weeks each year open their doors and provide a place to stay, food and warm hospitality.
In addition to the dedicated staff who work with families around locating affordable housing, finding jobs, budgeting resources, and parenting skills, there are about 50 volunteers each week who stay overnight with the guests, play with the children, and open their hearts in support of these families.

What is Reiki – Reiki (ray-kee) is a hands-on (or non-touch for those that prefer) Japanese healing method/art. During a session, recipients are fully clothed and can lie down or sit for their sessions. Preliminary search indicates that a session of Reiki can promote relaxation and potentially decrease stress, increase calm, and improve comfort. More information on Reiki and other integrative therapies can be found at the National Center Complementary and Integrative Health ( Not to take the place of conventional medicine, Reiki is offered in hospitals and other healthcare settings, as supportive care for patients undergoing cancer treatment, pain management, and before and after surgery.
