Celebrate Earth Day 2020 with a ‘Virtual’ Walk in the Woods

Celebrate Earth Day 2020 with a ‘Virtual’ Walk in the Woods

Today is the 50th Anniversary of ‘Earth Day.’  Be sure to spend some time in nature today, in gratitude, as you celebrate this wondrous planet where we all live. We are the earth’s caregivers and protectors, and that was never more evident and important than now. As Astronaut Carl Sagan’s photo demonstrated and spoke of, the earth is but a tiny speck of dust in the Universe. “Everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives,” Sagan later wrote. “On a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”Candy Hansen, a planetary scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory who worked on the Voyager imaging team noted, “It also made me think about how vulnerable our tiny planet is.”

‘Shinrin yoku’ – Japanese ‘Forest Bathing.’ Shinrin in Japanese means “forest,” and yokumeans “bath.” Shinrin-yoku means ‘bathing in’ or ‘taking in’ the forest atmosphere through all of your senses.
We all know how being in nature can make us feel good. The practice of ‘Shinrin yoku’ means ‘being in’ and ‘connecting with’ nature through your all of your senses – sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. Enjoying the sounds of the forest, birds singing, insects and animals moving through the woods, the wind rustling through the leaves, the scent of the earth, leaves, flowers and trees, the sunlight filtering through the leaves, the clean fresh air. Enjoying flora and fauna in nature, while escaping the sounds and routines of everyday life. These experiences in nature, and the time you take away fromthe ‘hustle and bustle,’ provides a sense of peace, comfort and calm. Being in nature can reenergize, refresh and rejuvenate you, improving your overall health and sense of wellbeing.

During This National Emergency, Dreamtime Wellness LLC Goes ‘Virtual’

“Caution, without panic,” is the directive of our national, state and local officials as well as our healthcare agencies, during this national emergency.
As we learn new information daily regarding the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic my utmost priority continues to be the health and safety of my patients and the greater community. While many of my clients are healthy, others fall into the ‘high risk’ category, as designated by the Centers of Disease and Prevention (CDC). After careful deliberation I decided to avoid seeing patients/clients/students in-person, in order to abide by the current ‘social distancing’ directive. This went into effect on March 16th, though I have not seen clients since 2.20.2020 due to travel, and then recovering at home since, from an injury sustained while ‘on retreat.’ I arrived home March 7th, to a different world.
Dreamtime Wellness™ offers education and services for relaxation, stress and pain management, so while this seems a prime reason for providing these services during this time of increased stress, providing them in-person, is not prudent at this time.
The health and safety of ‘all ‘ is of the utmost importance to me. This temporary closure of my physical office and in-person sessions/ classes is with your health, my health, and the health of all our families and communities in mind, especially the elderly, who are at highest risk of complications from this virus. The authorities have thus far indicated that “most people who contract the virus will have mild to moderate symptoms.” But, because of its contagious nature and no current vaccine, extreme measures are in order.
When it is deemed appropriate to do so, we will be back in the office offering sessions and classes, as well as offering home, hospice and hospital visits. In the meantime, I am making myself available as a resource to you and the community to assist with ‘relaxation and stress management’. I am offering ‘virtual’ services for support, while satisfying the ‘social distancing’ recommendation currently in place, in order to help keep you and everyone else healthy and safe.

Good Harbor Beach. Gloucester MA.

We are all in this together. And together, we will all get through this!
Be Calm. Be Kind. Be Cautious. Be Safe. Be Healthy.

Zentangle ~

Zentangle ~

We are so excited to bring to you this calming method to release anxiety, depression, doubt, worry and bring out your creative side…we all have it!
Don’t think, “I can’t draw – with the Zentangle method ANYONE can draw!
“The Zentangle® Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns”.
We Will:
• Learn the 8 basic steps to practice the Zentangle® Method.
• Learn the step outs to creating a basic tangle- sounds technical-it’s not and its fun!
• Share Ideas and resources like Zentangle.com and pattern hunting!
• Learn as many tangles as we have time for- You will want too!
The Zentangle® Method of drawing patterns is simple to learn and is perfect for those who feel they lack artistic talent, creativity or “can’t draw a straight line”! That is not an issue in Zentangle® in fact it will probably be a plus as you start on this exciting journey. We like to say, “You Can Do Anything, One Stroke at a Time”.
Zentangle® requires only a few materials (all materials included) and can be done anywhere. Once you start to Zentangle® you will want to share your knowledge and to learn as many “tangles” as possible. There are hundreds to learn!
What then is a tangle? Think of it this way…In yoga you learn poses and in Zentangle you will learn tangles. Each tangle is its own structured pattern that is broken down into simple steps.
Each step leads to the next without any need for planning and is very easy to follow. There are less than 5 steps or less to complete a tangle.
Using the Zentangle® method on its own is relevant from a design perspective as well and from a wellness perspective- it’s calming and fun!. Described by Ikuko Acosta, Ph.D Director of the Graduate Art Therapy Program at New York University. In reference to Zentangle® Acosta states, “Repeating something, like lines or colors, for even 30-40 minutes has the function of neutralizing anxiety and anxiousness. As humans, we often associate our feelings with our visual environments. Repetitious behaviors can therefore be very calming.”
“The Zentangle® Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns”.
Ok, too much information TMI.-Then lets get after it and TANGLE!

As an Artist and Designer, I am interested in discovering the opportunities that naturally present themselves in the process of creating Art. I use my creativity to solve problems and discover new avenues of learning through color, composition and line.
My approach to Art is simple, I study an object or landscape in detail, I remember it and then Paint, Draw or Sculpt it using paints, ink, clay other media. This experiential art process allows for my own inner interpretation, insight and expression to come through in a natural and symbiotic way.
My painting can be interpreted as Interior spaces in which the viewer can enter and move through freely feeling familiar in its chaos or lack of objectiveness and then find rest and comfort in some defined area. Currently, my art follows along the lines of Abstract Expressionism. Some of my favorite artists are Rothko, Reinhard, Sonia Delaunay, Krasner, Klee, De Kooning, Adnan and Matisse to name a few- I have many!
In April of 2015, my Art took on a new twist as I discovered the Zentangle® Method of drawing.

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day

Join me in Celebrating Earth Day!

Wherever you are, spend some time in nature today embracing the beauty of Mother Earth.
What are your plans for Earth Day?

I will be walking in memory of my mother, at the Morton Arboretum where we shared many walks together. The daffodil and redbud will be in bloom; some of mom’s favorites.

Tips for Celebrating Earth Day.

Practice gratitude as you enjoy a walking meditation this Earth Day, surrounded by the beauty of nature, and experience the peace, comfort and calm that comes from that.

We have but one planet to live on. Be sure to take good care of her!

Happy Earth Day,

Karen

From Cuba, With Love.

From Cuba With Love …
‘We’re stranded. Please send money!’  :O
That was the email I envisioned having to send when our Saturday flight home from Cuba was cancelled, due to weather. Direct flights on Jet Blue Cuba to Boston only run once a week. Worse was the fact we were nearly out of cash and U.S. ATMs and credit cards cannot be used in Cuba.
Stranded in Cuba. What do you do? Cuba is not a bad place to be stuck, but without a cell phone or computer (off the grid on purpose), it was not easy to book a flight. And no extra cash to stay longer. e scrambled to find an alternate flight to Florida. At least if we could get to Florida, ATMs, credit cards, a hotel computer and phone would be available.

Find Your Bliss

“To experience peace does not mean that your life is always blissful. It means that you are capable of tapping into a blissful state of mind amidst the normal chaos of a hectic life. “
– Jill Bolte Taylor

How Do You Find Your Bliss? Walking the woods and beaches of Gloucester MA, hiking the red rocks of Sedona Arizona, or x-county skiing in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine are my go-to’sfor finding bliss, defined as perfect happiness; great joy. Why does it seem we often must go somewhere in order to find that feeling of ‘bliss?’ Rather than seeking bliss outside ourselves, we also can go within to experience feelings of happiness and joy.

Finding bliss right here, right now in any given moment is a helpful skill that can be achieved through the daily practice of meditation, reiki and self-hypnosis. Daily practice is encouraged because, when we practice regularly we become more skilled, the practice become more innate and it is easier to achieve a state of ‘bliss’ in the recesses of our own mind. It is true, research supports that achieving positive feelings of happiness and joy can be enhanced when surrounded by nature, using all of our senses to take in the surrounding beauty. But learning, having, and using these helpful tools to create bliss in any given moment is valuable for helping us move through the chaos of a complicated world, with greater levels of peace and calm.

“Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that’s very important for good health.”— Dalai Lama

To get started, contact us to learn a simple 5 minute relaxation technique. If not true bliss, you can at least learn to slow your thoughts and experiences greater levels of peace and calm, in mind and body, and over time, with practice, a feeling of bliss. Relaxation techniques offer the potential Benefits of Relaxation:

  • Slowing heart rate
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Slowing rate of breathing
  • Improving digestion
  • Maintaining normal blood sugar levels
  • Reducing activity of stress hormones
  • Increasing blood flow to major muscles
  • Reducing muscle tension and chronic pain
  • Improving concentration and mood
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Lowering fatigue
  • Reducing anger and frustration
  • Boosting confidence to handle problems
