Today is NATIONAL SENIOR HEALTH & FITNESS DAY

Dreamtime Wellness ™

Your Bridge to Health; Promoting Optimal Wellness for Mind, Body & Spirit

Celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day. The last Wednesday in May is Senior Health & Fitness Day.  Approximately 100,000 senior adults will participate in activities across the United States.

What are your plans for exercise today?

Make time for a walk, bike, tennis, yoga, tai chi, pilates or kayak. Exercise and a good night’s sleep can increase serotonin, giving a sense of well being and help control blood pressure.

Cape Ann has many beautiful parks, beaches and woods to enjoy a peaceful walk. Or, enjoy one of the many fitness centers where you can exercise no matter the weather. Mix it up and ry something new.

#AWalkaDay

Recruit a friend to join you and make it more fun! See what your local council on aging and senior centers have to offer.

Note: Check with your doctor prior to beginning a new exercise program. Exercise within safe guidelines and the recommendations of your physician.

It’s National ‘Heat Awareness’ and ‘Don’t Fry’ Day!

It’s National ‘Heat Awareness’ and ‘Don’t Fry’ Day!

Beach Umbrella

Summer Sun Safety

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

On this cold, cloudy day with damp rain and temperatures in the 50’s, it seems strange to be talking about sun exposure. But Memorial Weekend is here, and it’s certainly sunny somewhere!

Weather dependent, the beaches will be packed this holiday weekend, along with the risks of overexposure to the sun.  Be aware – use sun protection and sun safety practices!

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.3 million people are diagnosed annually. Fortunately, skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer.

Unfortunately, skin cancer is increasing in the United States and the American Cancer Society estimates that one American dies every hour from skin cancer.  The risk increases the more time we spend outdoors in the sun.

Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer and highly treatable when detected early.

Colorectal Cancer on the Rise in Young Adults

Dreamtime Wellness ™ Photo copy

Your Bridge to Health; Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind & Spirit

March is Colon-Rectal Cancer Awareness Month –

According to the American Cancer Society, “Thanks in part to improvements in screening, the rates of new colon and rectal cancer diagnoses have been falling in the United States for people ages 50 and older. But for people under 50, for whom routine screening is not recommended, rates seem to be increasing significantly,” especially among Generation Xers.

Prevention, Screening, Early Detection and Treatment of Colon-Rectal Cancer SAVES LIVES!

Talk to Your Doctor About Screening.

Prevent. Screen. Treat. Early Detection Saves Lives.

Signs of Colorectal Cancer can include changes in bowel movements and blood in the stool. But cancer of the colon and/or rectum (colorectal cancer) can begin without symptoms, which is why early screening is important. Pre-cancerous and benign polyps can be removed before they become cancer. While routine screening often begins at 50, screening for those at higher risk may begin as early as 30’s. If you or your family have a history of colorectal cancer, benign colorectal polyps, or inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease,) you may need to begin screenings earlier than age 50.
