Yoga for Health

Your Bridge to Health; Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Studies show that yoga offers benefits for mind, body and spirit.

For general information on Yoga – from the National Institutes of Health/National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health – https://nccih.nih.gov/health/yoga/introduction.htm

But with so many styles of Yoga, which do you choose?

  • Hatha
  • Kripalu
  • Vinyasa.
  • Iyengar.
  • Ashtanga.
  • Bikram.
  • Hot Yoga.
  • Kundalini.
  • Yin Yoga. ….

My Personal Introduction to Yoga – Nineteen years ago yoga was part of my ‘tool kit’ for smoking cessation. Gentle hatha yoga that focused on slow, stretching movements in synch with following the breath. The ending shivasana (pronounced Shuh-vah-sana) allowed for a deep head-to-toe (or toe-to-head, depending on the instructor) relaxation. Sometimes accompanied by a guided meditation and a warm blanket. My first session allowed for an emotional release I had not expected. Perhaps a release and letting go of my former 22 -year pack-per-day habit that, I was somewhat reluctantly giving up. For the first 3 sessions, the deep breathing and rocking movements caused a bone racking cough that I felt was cleaning out my polluted, tar-ridden lungs.

Since then, I continue to intermittently enjoy a variety of yoga classes. Gentle hatha and kripalu style are still my favorites; helpful for general relaxation, improved balance and flexibility, and improved mood. Shavasana remains my favorite pose (asana.) Lying flat on my back, arms at my side, focusing on the breath flowing easy in, and easy out. This position of deep rest and relaxation can be practiced most anywhere. That along with self-Reiki, remains part of my daily practice for relaxation and stress relief.

The Good News – there is a style of yoga and teacher to suit everyone, including ‘chair yoga.’ Yoga is often available at local senior centers, including at the Rockport Senior Center and Gloucester’s Rose Baker Senior Center.

Recommendations From the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Healthcare –

If You Are Considering Practicing Yoga:

  • Do not use yoga to replace conventional medical care or to postpone seeing a health care provider about pain or any other medical condition.
  • If you have a medical condition, talk to your health care provider before starting yoga.
  • Ask a trusted source (such as your health care provider or a nearby hospital) to recommend a yoga practitioner. Find out about the training and experience of any practitioner you are considering. To learn more, see Selecting a Complementary Medicine Practitioner.
  • Everyone’s body is different, and yoga postures should be modified based on individual abilities. Carefully selecting an instructor who is experienced with and attentive to your needs is an important step toward helping you practice yoga safely. Ask about the physical demands of the type of yoga in which you are interested and inform your yoga instructor about any medical issues you have.
  • Carefully think about the type of yoga you are interested in. For example, hot yoga (such as Bikram yoga) may involve standing and moving in humid environments with temperatures as high as 105°F. Because such settings may be physically stressful, people who practice hot yoga should take certain precautions. These include drinking water before, during, and after a hot yoga practice and wearing suitable clothing. People with conditions that may be affected by excessive heat, such as heart disease, lung disease, and a prior history of heat stroke may want to avoid this form of yoga. Women who are pregnant may want to check with their health care providers before starting hot yoga.
  • Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health approaches you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Got the ‘Holiday Blues?’ If so, You Are Not Alone.

Your Bridge to Health; Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Your Bridge to Health; Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Tis the Season … But ‘Happy Holidays’ Does Not Ring True for Everyone.

According to information from the Cleveland Clinic, “approximately one half million of the U.S. population suffers from winter SAD, while 10 to 20 percent may suffer from a more mild form of winter blues.“

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is defined as “major depressive disorder with seasonal pattern.’‘Winter’ or ‘Holiday blues,’ are less severe forms of seasonal mood disorder. Holiday Blues Defined – “Feelings of sadness, loneliness, depression and anxiety in and around the holidays, caused by loss of family and loved ones through divorce or distance from the childhood home or place where the holidays were most enjoyed in years past.”

Types of Depression

  • Major Depression.
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder.
  • Bipolar Disorder.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Psychotic Depression.
  • Peripartum (Postpartum) Depression.
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
  • ‘Situational’ or Reactive Depression.

Depression Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) –

  • More than 1 out of 20 Americans 12 years of age and older reported current depression (moderate or severe depressive symptoms in the past 2 weeks) in 2009-2012. (Figure at right.)
  • Among Americans 12 years of age and over, a greater percentage of females reported depression than females.
  • Almost 10% of adults aged 40-59 reported current depression.

Symptoms of Depression – According to the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic (DCSM) criteria for Major Depressive Disorder, a person must experience five or more symptoms below for a continuous period of at least two weeks.

  • Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that used to be enjoyable
  • Change in weight or appetite (either increase or decrease)
  • Change in activity: being more active than usual or being less active than usual
  • Changes in Sleep Patterns: Insomnia (difficulty sleeping) or sleeping too much
  • Feeling tired or not having any energy
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Difficulties concentrating and paying attention
  • Thoughts of death or suicide.

Check with your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms. For a diagnosis of depression, most symptoms must be present every day or nearly every day and must cause significant distress or problems in daily life functioning. Request a referral to a qualified licensed therapist (psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, mental health counselor) if these symptoms are severe and/or disrupting your daily life, work or relationships. Seek Professional Help for Depression.

Smoking Cessation – Special Programs for Veterans

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Your Bridge to Health; Promoting Optimal Wellness for Mind Body and Spirit

Smoking Cessation – November was Lung Cancer Awareness Month and the Great American Smoke-Out, 2 major incentives to increase awareness for smoking cessation. More support is available than ever before. No time like the present to stop. Just think of the savings you receive once you stop smoking, in health benefits and ‘cash-in-hand.’  A great way to begin the New Year is with a focus on you and your good health. Start to put a plan in place now.

Help is Here!

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a new program for smoking cessation to help make make it easier to stop, offering support via text messaging. 1-855-Quit-Vet.

Blow

Talk to your doctor about group and individualized treatment programs for smoking cessation. Stopping smoking can be a challenge. Medications for tobacco treatment along with tobacco treatment counseling may make it easier. Ask your doctor if you are a candidate for Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT,) Zyban (Wellbutrin) or Chantix.

Addiction is a ‘disease of the brain.’ Nicotine addiction is no exception, and the cigarette companies know as much about the addiction pathway as healthcare providers, finding ways to  make cigarettes more addictive so they can sell more cigarettes.

Collaborative, comprehensive, supportive programs make it easier to stop.

Want to Stop Smoking? Help is Available.

Do You Need Reasons to Stop Smoking? I know I did. Once there were more reasons to stop than to continue smoking, my choice became clear. Hiding from my nieces and nephews so I could smoke. Seeing my niece at the age of 4 mimic me smoking. Then, in my late 30’s I began to notice physical changes – changes in my skin, decreased circulation, decreased endurance, huffing and puffing walking up stairs. A chronic cough. Getting more colds and bronchitis, especially in the winter. The disgusting smell on my hair, my skin, my clothes, my breath. Nasty taste. The cost. Being outside a party, by myself and seeing everyone else inside having fun. I realized, I was missing out on life.

What are Your REASONS to STOP? “My health” is the #1 reason people tell me they want to stop smoking. Your HEALTH is an excellent reason to make positive lifestyle changes.

“The First Wealth is Health.”  -Ralph Waldo Emerson.                                                       You have but one life to live. Choose to live it well.

Cigarette Smoking Causes:

LUNG CANCER – Cigarette smoking is the # Cause of Lung Cancer (80-90%)

  • Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States.
  • 1 out of 4 Cancer Deaths are from lung cancer.
  • More people die each year from lung cancer than colon, prostate and breast cancer combined
  • The rate of lung cancer in men has dropped 32% for men, but risen 94% for women

OTHER CANCERS. Smoking causes cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, cervix, colon, and rectum, as well as acute myeloid leukemia.

INFLAMMATION and IMPAIRED IMMUNE FUNCTION – Making you more at risk of illness, including colds, cancers and heart disease.

HEART DISEASE – Cigarette smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease by itself. When it acts with other factors, it greatly increases risk. Smoking increases blood pressure, decreases exercise tolerance and increases the tendency for blood to clot. (American Heart Association.)

Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment Can Save Lives.

The most important thing you can do to lower your lung cancer risk is to quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. If you smoke, ask your doctor about your risks, screening and how to stop smoking.

It’s Your Life – Take Good Care of Your Lungs. Take Good Care of Your Health.

Lung Cancer DTW FB

Decrease Risk Factors –

  • Stop Smoking (Best thing you can do is ‘never start.’ )
  • Avoid exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Avoid exposure to radon* and other chemicals
  • Eat healthy, balanced meals with a variety of fruits and vegetables.
  • Exercise regularly. (Ask your doctor for recommendations.)

*Have your home tested for radon – Contact your local public health department or the American Lung Society for information on radon testing. More information on Radon Here.

‘Stop Smoking’ Today. Help is Available – Tobacco use and nicotine addiction is complex. Stopping smoking may require a comprehensive, collaborative approach. Electronic cigarettes and vaporizers contain nicotine, the addictive component in cigarettes.

Stopping Smoking is the Single Most Important Step you can take to improve their longevity and quality of life.

The GOOD News – The minute you stop smoking, your health begins to improve.                     Help and support are available for those that want to stop smoking.

Ask Your Physician – about your lung health, prevention of disease, screening, diagnosis, treatment and recommendations to stop smoking. If you have lung disease or have undergone lung surgery, ask your physician about Pulmonary Rehabilitation.**

United States Military Offering Integrative Therapies as Adjunctive (Supportive) Therapies for Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (PTSD.)

Reiki has been offered at U.S. Military Bases and Hospitals as far back as 2005 through Integrative Therapy programs including at:

  • Fort Bliss
  • Fort Hood
  • Walter Reed Hospital

Use of Complementary Therapies and the Military – more information can be found at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Center for Integrative Health (NCCIH.) Integrative healthcare (IH) combine conventional therapies with supportive complementary therapies that have been studied and known to be safe and at least minimally effective and do no harm. The goal of IH is to provide ‘best outcomes’ and higher patient satisfactions. Studies have looked at safety and efficacy of a variety IH therapies for:

  • Relief of pain (improved comfort)
  • Relief of tension (emotional and physical)
  • Relief of anxiety (increased calm)
  • Improved sleep
  • Adjunctive treatment of PTSD
  • Adjunctive treatment of TBI

Note: A referral from your physician is recommended prior to seeking integrative therapies for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD.) Screening by a healthcare professional is recommended prior to referring to complementary therapies that may create deep relaxation (Eg. Hypnosis, Meditation, Reiki and Yoga.)

Professional Screening for Trauma – Recent study concludes that “clinical implications suggest that patients should be screened and treated for trauma-like symptoms including intrusive thoughts linked to anxiety and depression before referral to complementary programs that offer meditative or relaxation interventions.”  Ask Your Doctor Before Seeking Complementary Therapies such as Hypnosis, Meditation, Reiki and Yoga.
