Practicing Gratitude, Counting Blessings

Practicing Gratitude, Counting Blessings

Taking time off through New Years, I was looking forward to some planned ‘down time.’ Be careful what you wish for!

I have been home with a bug since before the holiday. Generally, I am in very good health, but a lingering cold put a damper on my holiday plans and festivities. I sit at home today, enjoying a cup of hot tea, with honey, lemon and ginger. My Reiki Teacher, Hyakuten Sensei, a Buddhist monk from Kyoto Japan teaches that – “A cup of tea. A cup of enlightenment.” Hopefully, along with enlightenment comes a cure for this cold!   😉

The message on my Yogi tea bag (each bad has a written positive saying or quote), gives me pause to reflect –  “An attitude of gratitude brings opportunities.”

‘End of Year’ Accounting. 2019 is nearly over and I find myself making time for a retrospective accounting of the year. Not the financial kind that the IRS is looking for, but the psycho-spiritual kind, making note of that which has fed my heart, nourished my spirit, and brought Joy.

New experiences and adventures, meeting new people, exploring various cultures, and learning … all bring me joy. They also bring opportunity to gather new information and skills to share with students and clients. Their positive feedback and improved results is what brings me joy. Do what you love. Love what you do. Seeing their smiling faces after sessions, hearing their reports of “feeling better,” “more hopeful,” learning of their positive changes, hearing their expressed gratitude …, makes my work Joyful.

Gratitude is a two-way street. Whether we give or receive, there is Gratitude.

Heart Waka (Japanese Poetry) for Peace and Calm

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Waka directly translates as “Japanese poem.” Japan’s Emperor Meiji (November 3, 1852 – July 29, 1912) was born in Kyoto. He is said to have written 100,000 waka. This form of Japanese Poetry was part of the teachings of USUI Mikao Sensei’s Reiki Ryōhō, a Japanese Healing Art/Method that originated in 1922. The practice of reading waka is known as gyosei. Waka from the Emperor Meiji are read at the gatherings of the Reiki Gakkai, the original Reiki Association in Tokyo.

Meditative and Reflective Practices – Even during chaotic, unsettled and stormy times in our lives, learning and practicing meditation, reiki, tai chi, qi gong, yoga and other similar meditative and reflective practices can help one find a greater sense of inner peace and calmness.

‘Heart’ Waka from Emperor Meiji – As you read and reflect upon this waka titled ‘heart,’ may you also enjoy a sense    of ‘peace, comfort and calm.’ Note the ‘rainbow’ cloud in the photo. In Japan, this type of cloud is known as zui un, and is considered to be an auspicious sighting. Please freely share this photo and waka.

October Community Reiki Share to Help Support Children in Africa

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind & Spirit

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind & Spirit

Tuesday. October 6th. ‘Community Reiki Share’ in Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Join us in Supporting the Kangemi Charity and Children of Nairobi, Kenya. Having just returned from a sabbatical in Africa, it seems appropriate that this month’s Reiki Share is donating proceeds to an African charity.  All are welcomed to attend to enjoy a Reiki Session while supporting this worthy cause!

This month’s choice of charities was inspired by Advanced Western and Japanese Reiki Practitioner (Komyo Okuden/3rd Degree) and FOB Suzanne Sweeney, owner of Energize Body and Mind here in Gloucester. Suzanne’s mother-in-law Prafulla Ganatraa, coordinates the Kangemi Charity in Kenya, helping to feed, clothe and educate children in an impoverished area of Nairobi.

Kangemi Charity Kenya

Reiki Teacher Prafulla Ganatraa helping children in Nairobi, Kenya

Suzanne’s husband Mehul Ganatra had this to say about The Kangemi Charity this is a grass-roots charity started by my mother (a Reiki master) and a few of her Reiki friends three and a half years ago. The goal is to feed the children of the Kangemi slums (located in Nairobi, Kenya). The slums have a population of about 120,000 with no access to basic facilities (e.g. sewerage, medical). What started out with feeding 50 kids every Sunday has now grown to over 300! In addition to one meal a week, they also occasionally provide some clothing (school uniforms) and blankets. Thanks to some generous donations, the charity now pays the school tuition for 74 kids in primary school and 3 students in secondary school. There is definitely a need to do more. Please note that 100% of the donations my mother receives go towards helping the kids.”

In her efforts to help the children, Prafulla Ganatraa is also teaching them Reiki, demonstrated in this photo. Join us in helping support the wonderful work she is doing!
