Try Reiki – for a More Relaxed Holiday

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

The Holiday Season is meant to be joyful, but If you feel added stress, you are not alone. The holidays can also bring up negative thoughts and feelings and increased stress due to added commitments, financial strains, travel, and increased grief and sadness over those we have loved and lost. Spending time with others and focusing on positive memories from the past may help.

Minimize Stress for a Healthier Immune System. When we feel stressed and anxious, the adrenal glands release the hormone cortisol. Cortisol functions to reduce inflammation in the body, which is good, but over time, these efforts to reduce inflammation also suppress the immune system. Chronic stress results in high cortisol levels and reduces the body’s natural response to fight viruses and bacteria, making you more susceptible to colds and flu. Relaxation and adequate sleep help lower cortisol levels and support the body’s immune system.

Got Stress?? If you experience negative stress in your life, consider de-stressing with relaxation techniques. A session of Reiki (ray-kee) can create a more relaxed mind and body, helpful for decreasing stress.

“Every session is different, but every session is wonderful.”  ~ G.F. Gloucester MA

Other methods to help decrease stress and better support the immune system include – acupuncture, art therapy, exercise, massage, meditation, mindfulness, music therapy, tai chi, and yoga.

Remember if you feel stressed or sad this holiday, you are not alone! Seek emotional support. Talk to family and friends. Professional counseling may be in order. Talk to your physician; ask for a referral.

“I feel whole again.” ~ Veronica W. Salem MA, after her Reiki session.

“Some Reiki is better than no Reiki.”  ~ Mrs. Hawayo Takata, the Japanese Reiki Teacher credited with bringing Reiki to the West.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) –

  • Reiki appears to be generally safe
  • Reiki should not be used to replace conventional care or to postpone seeing a health care provider about a health problem.
  • To ensure safe and coordinated care, tell all your health care providers about any complementary health approaches you use.

“The pain in my head is gone.” –  J.L. (referred by her doctor for complaint of persistent migraine headache.)

The response to stress can be physical and emotional tension that causes headache, back pain, difficulty sleeping, increased alcohol and other substance use, being easily angered, feeling depressed, and having low energy. Chronic stress can lower the immune response and cause inflammation leading to chronic disease such as high blood pressure, endocrine, gastrointestinal, metabolic, autoimmune, and mental health disorders.

The opposite of the stress response is the relaxation response.

Whether you have as Reiki session as supportive care before surgery, for pain management, during cancer treatment, or general stress management the relaxation provided has potential health benefits, including –

  • Improved comfort
  • Improved mood
  • Increased calm
  • A greater sense of well-being

For a healthy mind and body, seek emotional support from family and friends. Professional help is available – Talk to a psychologist. Ask your physician for a referral.

Other methods to relax and de-stress include  – acupuncture, art therapy, breathing relaxation, dance, exercise, massage, mindfulness, meditation, music therapy, prayer, and yoga. Find a relaxation technique that is effective, affordable and fits into your schedule. Even better – learn relaxation techniques that you can use daily.

All Levels of Reiki Training are Available  – Reiki First Degree/Level 1 focuses on the daily use of self-Reiki for self-care. Part of Reiki Practice is twice daily reflection upon the Reiki Principles from the Founder of Usui Reiki Ryoho, Mikao Usui Sensei of Japan – Just for Today…, Anger Not. Worry Not. Be Grateful. Work Diligently. Be Kind to Others.  Positive affirmations to think about and live throughout the day.  Contact me for information on upcoming classes and introductory talks.

However you choose to relax and support your immune system, gift yourself or a loved one a gift of relaxation this holiday season and enjoy a healthier, happier holiday!

De-Stress During the Holiday Season … and Beyond

Dreamtime Wellness ™

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Got Stress??

Stress 465cd4826004c9b136a5623d1de54d11

You are not alone. And the Holiday Season can be an especially stressful time for many with added financial strain, grief and sadness over those we have loved and lost, and overwhelming, over-commitments.

According to the 2014 annual Stress in America™ survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) the Top 4 sources of stress are –

Money, Work, Family Responsibilities, and Health Concerns.

The APA study also found –

  •  72% of Americans reported feeling stressed about money at least some of the time during the past month.
  • 22% said that they experienced extreme stress about money during the past month
  • Parents, younger generations and lower-income households (less than $50,000.00 annual income) have higher stress than others overall
  • Some people are putting their health care needs on hold because of financial concerns.
  • Stress about money impacts relationships
  • 22% say they are not doing enough to manage their stress.
  • American stress levels have been trending down since the annual survey first began in 2007, but still “higher than healthy levels.”

Here’s Some Good News –

  • Americans who have some emotional support report lower stress levels
  • Help is Available!

If you are experiencing negative stress in your life, or feel overwhelmed by stress seek help! Talk to your doctor. Ask about professional counseling. Look into resources in the community. Talk to family and friends for emotional support.

Remember – You are not alone! Stress is a normal and unavoidable part of life. Some stress is even considered positive, such as the stress that motivates us to accomplish a task. But too much negative stress can negatively affect your emotional and physical health and wellbeing. Especially when it occurs on a daily basis.

Stress Response – The response to stress can be physical and emotional tension, pain, lowered immune response, and inflammation. Chronic stress can lead to chronic disease including high blood pressure, endocrine, metabolic, autoimmune, and mental health disorders.

RELAX and DE-STRESS – The opposite of the stress response is the relaxation response. Methods to relax and de-stress include: acupuncture, art therapy, deep breathing, exercise, hypnosis, laughter/humor, massage, mindfulness, meditation, music and dance, reading, reiki, tai chi, and yoga. Consider incorporating complementary and integrative therapies into your ‘wellness care plan.’ Learn techniques that you can incorporate daily for ‘best results.’

REMEMBER to BREATHE. When stressed, people often breathe more shallow or even hold their breath. Breathing relaxation techniques are simple to learn, fast and effective to use, and available 24/7.

WALK or DRIVE by the OCEAN. Views of the water can change your psychology and physiology. Just ask Joey who is lucky to enjoy the View from the Dock every day! Take a drive along BackShore Gloucester or walk Good Harbor or Singing Beach and you will a relief of tension and experience your blood pressure lowering.

Lucky to Live on Cape Ann!

Where – Manchester Community Center. 40 Beach St. (Harbor Place) in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Every 1st Tuesday of the Month.

This month we are hoping to help increase awareness of Lung Cancer, which is the #1 cause of cancer deaths in men and women in the U.S., more than breast, colorectal and prostate cancer combined. Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment SAVES LIVES!

This month the charity we are teaming up with is www.LungForce.org and for those effected by Lung Cancer. Cheryl, a 34-year-old woman was diagnosed with lung cancer in October. A wife and mother of an 8 month old, Cheryl never smoked and lived a healthy lifestyle. She is currently in treatment and we wish her well.

You do not have to smoke to get lung cancer – exposure to radon gas and other chemicals and toxins in the environment are linked to lung cancer. Essex County and Cape Ann have a higher radon level than average, due to the large concentration of granite. Test Your Home or Place of Business – order a radon test kit! I got mine from the American Lung Association. You  can also order them through the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency.)

If you currently smoke, STOP! As a registered nurse in critical care and cardiac rehabilitation, a former smoker, certified hypnotherapist and tobacco treatment specialist, a large part of my work has been helping people stop smoking and live healthier lives. Contact me for help to stop smoking or http://makesmokinghistory.org/1-800-quitnow.html. Take Back Your Health and Your Life! You’ll be glad you did.

On Retreat – Quiet Reflection and Helpful Healing

Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Definition of ‘Retreat’ –
  • a quiet or secluded place in which one can rest and relax.
  • a period of seclusion for the purposes of prayer and meditation.
In this fast-paced, busy culture where can you find ‘sanctuary?’
Where can you escape to for healing the mind, body, and spirit?
With its many beautiful beaches, rocky outcroppings and gardens with oceans views, and wooded pathways to choose from almost any spot on Cape Ann will generally do! But on the special occasion of the August 15th/150th Anniversary of the birth of USUI Sensei, (founder of the Japanese Healing Method/Art of Reiki Ryoho,) I chose to drive 5 hours to an isolated monastery in the Catskill Mountains.

Dai Bosatsu Zendo Kongo-ji (DBZ,) is a Zen Buddhist (Rinzai) monastery and retreat center located on 1,400 acres in a deciduous forest region of the Catskills in upstate New York. While Reiki is not a Buddhist or religious practice, the founder of Reiki Ryoho was a Pureland Buddhist monk from Japan. Located with the highest lake in the Catskills, with the nearest town over 20 miles away, no wi-fi, and fashioned to look like a Japanese Buddhist temple, DBZ is a perfect place for meditation, retreat, and Reiki Teacher Training refresher.

The Road to Sanctuary – After 4 1/2 hours of highway travel, the road leading to Dai Bosatsu Zendo Kongo-ji is nearly 20 miles of meandering road, much of it dirt. Once you arrive at the entrance gates, there’s still another 2 miles to navigate. No street lights, a rugged and rutted road, and no GPS necessitated a pre-sunset arrival and slow drive. A good introduction to what the weekend would entail. Driving slowly along this road surrounded by the peace and beauty of nature allowed us to better enjoy the sounds of nature with glimpses animals. We rolled down the windows to better enjoy the sights, sounds, and scents of nature. Birds and crickets chirped a harmonious welcome. A bubbling brook created a peaceful, rhythmic vibe for our final leg. We rode in silence. Breathing took on a restful pace, coming slower and deeper. Trees lining the road provided shade and a refreshing coolness on this hot August day. The scent of fresh air, earth and flowers danced in and out of our breathing passageways. Deer enjoyed an evening meal alongside the road, lifting their heads as if to say ‘hello’ before resuming eating. Unperturbed by our presence.  Blood pressure lowered. Having been here before, it felt a bit like ‘coming home’ and we welcomed the sense of peace that ensued.

DBZ Zendo Courtyard

Dai Bosatsu Zendo Courtyard

Beacher Lake – As we arrived at Beecher Lake (highest lake in the Catskills!) dragonflies danced across its surface, intercepting insects in their path. Waning sunlight sparkled on leaves already turning their autumn hues.  We pulled up to the Joraku-an (guesthouse) to meet with our Reiki Teacher, INAMOTO Hyakuten Sensei from Kyoto Japan. An azure sky and puffy white clouds reflected in the still, calm water reminding me of one of Hyakuten Sensei’s teachings – “Reiki creates a calm and peaceful mind, like a still pond reflecting the moonlight.”

Symbol of Freedom – On this occasion, just outside the Joraku-an in a tall pine sat a beautiful and majestic eagle. It seemed an auspicious sight, welcoming us to the 150th Anniversary of the birth of USUI Mikao, founder of Reiki Ryoho. The first of many ‘gifts’ we would receive throughout the weekend. This symbol of ‘freedom’ seemed a good omen for a weekend retreat.

Reiki Teacher from Japan – Here we met with Inamoto Hyakuten Sensei, founder of Komyo Reiki Kai™ and Reiki Teacher from Kyoto, Japan. Other Reiki Teachers from around the globe joined us for retreat, training and celebration, including Hiroki Nishina of Japan. This was Hiroki-san’s first time in the United States. I offered him a GMG cap and sticker as a memento of his trip to the U.S. Here, Hiroki proudly displays GMG in his home town of Kurashiki, Japan.

FB Message from Hiroki-san – “Hi, karen. (^_^)/ Thank you for the cool cap. I took a picture in Kurashiki where I live in. This is one of Japan’s best sunsets.”

Nice Hiroki-san! Thanks for ‘representing’ GMG in your home town in Japan! ~ Arigatou Gozaimasu! ~ Kansha Shite. That is indeed a beautiful sunset! Hope you get to Cape Ann to enjoy the sunsets, beaches and warm, friendly people.

Backyard Summer on Cape Ann 2015

Backyard Retreat – Don’t have time or can’t afford to travel for a structured retreat? You can arrange to have a ‘healing retreat’ in your own back yard. We are fortunate to have so many wonderful places for ‘retreat’ here on Cape Ann.

Simply make time to sit quietly:

  • In a garden.
  • On a beach.
  • In the woods.
  • Even in your own home, while imagining a peaceful place in nature.
Sun Setting on the Annisquam River

Sun Setting on the Annisquam River

Be sure to

  • Set aside time (even 5 minutes a day of quiet relaxation offers health benefits!)
  • Minimize outside distractions if possible; turn off cell phones and computers.
  • Sit or lie comfortably.
  • Close your eyes (if appropriate and safe) or can leave eyes open with a ‘soft gaze.’
  • Begin with a few slow, deep cleansing breaths, then continue breathing at a restful pace. Easy In. Easy Out.
  • Observe and connect with the beauty of nature around you, using all of your senses – sights, sounds, scents, textures.

Potential Health Benefits of Relaxation Include –

  • Lower heart rate
  • Decreased blood pressure
  • Slower, deeper rate of breathing
  • Reduced activity of stress hormones
  • Increased blood flow to major muscles
  • Reduced muscle tension and chronic pain
  • Improved concentration and mood
  • Decreased fatigue, more energy
  • More patience and tolerance
  • Increased confidence and clarity of thought
  • A great sense of inner peace and well-being

For Best Benefit – use relaxation techniques along with other positive coping methods, such as positive thinking, humor, managing time, exercise, adequate sleep, support from family and friends, and when necessary support of a professional.

However you choose to find your sanctuary, enjoy the health benefits of time away in a peaceful setting!

Do you have a favorite place or ‘retreat and relaxation?’ If so, share with FOB.

Feel free to contact me for more information on where to go on retreats, how to create a home retreat, reiki, meditation and relaxation techniques.   ~    Karen

June is PTSD Awareness Month

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind & Spirit

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind & Spirit

June has been designated PTSD Awareness Month by the National Center for PTSD (NCPTSD).

PTSD VA-NCPTSD_Color-Logo-1034h

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder resulting from exposure to a single or multiple traumatic events, such physical or sexual assault, natural or man-made disaster, and war-related combat stress. Symptoms of PTSD include persistent intrusive thoughts and distressing dreams about the traumatic event, triggered emotional responses to reminders of the trauma, efforts to avoid thinking or talking about the trauma, and persistent hypervigilance for cues that indicate additional danger or trauma re-occurring.

PTSD Statistics –

According to the National Center for PTSD,

  • about 7 to 8 percent of the U.S. population will have PTSD at some point in their lives.
  • about 5.2 million adults have PTSD during a given year.
  • Veterans with PTSD by service era:
    • Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom: About 11-20%
    • Gulf War (Desert Storm):  12%
    • Vietnam War: Estimated that 30% of Vietnam Veterans have had PTSD in their lifetime.
    • Estimated # of Veteran suicides per day – 20 (Source: CDC)

Some Symptoms of PTSD –

  • Anxiety and/or Depression
  • Sleep Disturbance and Nightmares
  • Irritability and outbursts of anger
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Hypervigilance (on constant “red alert”)
  • Feeling jumpy and easily startled
  • Substance Abuse
  • Suicidal Thoughts and Feelings

**Anyone can get PTSD at any age. If you or someone you know are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your physician for assistance.

Some Treatments for PTSD –

  • Counseling – Psychotherapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Family
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
  • Medications for anxiety/depression

Complementary and Integrative Therapies for PTSD  –

  • Acupuncture
  • Hypnosis
  • Meditation
  • Qi Gong
  • Reiki
  • Relaxation Techniques
  • Yoga

Many hospitals in the Boston area now advertise integrative healthcare programs. Fort Hood (TX,) Fort Belvoir (VA) and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (MD) offer integrative healthcare services to veterans (Eg. massage, reiki, reflexology and yoga.) A 2008 American Hospital Association survey found that 84 percent of hospitals reported patient demand as the primary rationale in offering complementary and integrative medicine services.

~ Ask your physician about ordering counseling and integrative services for PTSD, stress and/or pain management. When in the hospital, ask if these services are available. ~
