Winter Safety Tips

This morning’s bright sunshine on the dusting of snow while beautiful, is deceiving.  The temperature at 9 a.m. in Gloucester MA was only 4º!  Todays  weather forecast predicts a high of 18º.

‘Polar Vortex.’  The National Weather service describes this as “a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles. It ALWAYS exists near the poles, but weakens in summer and strengthens in winter.”

The Bright Side. I actually feel lucky, considering what parts of the midwest are enduring  – dangerously cold temperatures of subzero, up to 40º below with the wind chill factor in some areas. Many businesses and schools are closed. At 40º, exposed skin can suffer frost bite within 5 minutes of exposure.

Check on Elderly Family and Neighbors. Being outside or even in a cold house can lead to hypothermia, a body temperature of 95°F or lower. Hypothermia can cause many health problems, such as a heart attack, kidney problems, liver disease or even death. Cold weather extremes are especially detrimental for children, the elderly and anyone with cardiac and pulmonary disease. If you have underlying health issues, talk to your doctor about winter safety. Here are steps to lower your chance of getting hypothermia from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

“If you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.” — Mark Twain

My Weather Prediction – More snow to come. 🙂 Fortunately, last night’s squall only brought a dusting of snow on Cape Ann, but winter is not over yet. Here are some safety tips for shoveling and safe snow blowing for the next snow storm. Call a snow plowing company now to schedule their service. By the time a snow storm arrives, they might be fully booked!

Do you have a favorite snow plow company? Let GMG know.

Safety Tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help keep you safe in these extreme weather conditions.

Traveling in Winter. Today is a good day to stay indoors, relax and enjoy a cup of hot tea, but If you do have to get out in the cold or travel, here are some Tips for Traveling in Cold Weather.

During Extreme Weather. If possible stay indoors and enjoy a cup of tea, otherwise follow the safety guidelines from the CDC, NIH and your physician.

The Good NewsSpring is only 48 days away!

From Cuba, With Love.

From Cuba With Love …
‘We’re stranded. Please send money!’  :O
That was the email I envisioned having to send when our Saturday flight home from Cuba was cancelled, due to weather. Direct flights on Jet Blue Cuba to Boston only run once a week. Worse was the fact we were nearly out of cash and U.S. ATMs and credit cards cannot be used in Cuba.
Stranded in Cuba. What do you do? Cuba is not a bad place to be stuck, but without a cell phone or computer (off the grid on purpose), it was not easy to book a flight. And no extra cash to stay longer. e scrambled to find an alternate flight to Florida. At least if we could get to Florida, ATMs, credit cards, a hotel computer and phone would be available.

Find Your Bliss

“To experience peace does not mean that your life is always blissful. It means that you are capable of tapping into a blissful state of mind amidst the normal chaos of a hectic life. “
– Jill Bolte Taylor

How Do You Find Your Bliss? Walking the woods and beaches of Gloucester MA, hiking the red rocks of Sedona Arizona, or x-county skiing in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine are my go-to’sfor finding bliss, defined as perfect happiness; great joy. Why does it seem we often must go somewhere in order to find that feeling of ‘bliss?’ Rather than seeking bliss outside ourselves, we also can go within to experience feelings of happiness and joy.

Finding bliss right here, right now in any given moment is a helpful skill that can be achieved through the daily practice of meditation, reiki and self-hypnosis. Daily practice is encouraged because, when we practice regularly we become more skilled, the practice become more innate and it is easier to achieve a state of ‘bliss’ in the recesses of our own mind. It is true, research supports that achieving positive feelings of happiness and joy can be enhanced when surrounded by nature, using all of our senses to take in the surrounding beauty. But learning, having, and using these helpful tools to create bliss in any given moment is valuable for helping us move through the chaos of a complicated world, with greater levels of peace and calm.

“Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that’s very important for good health.”— Dalai Lama

To get started, contact us to learn a simple 5 minute relaxation technique. If not true bliss, you can at least learn to slow your thoughts and experiences greater levels of peace and calm, in mind and body, and over time, with practice, a feeling of bliss. Relaxation techniques offer the potential Benefits of Relaxation:

  • Slowing heart rate
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Slowing rate of breathing
  • Improving digestion
  • Maintaining normal blood sugar levels
  • Reducing activity of stress hormones
  • Increasing blood flow to major muscles
  • Reducing muscle tension and chronic pain
  • Improving concentration and mood
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Lowering fatigue
  • Reducing anger and frustration
  • Boosting confidence to handle problems
