‘What is Reiki?’ – Reiki (ray-kee) is a hands-on (or non-touch for those that prefer) healing method/art that originated in Japan in 1922. During a session, recipients are fully clothed and can lie down or sit for their sessions. Preliminary search indicates that a session of Reiki can promote relaxation and potentially decrease stress, increase calm, and improve comfort. More information on Reiki and other integrative therapies can be found at the National Center Complementary and Integrative Health (www.nccih.gov.) Not to take the place of conventional medicine, Reiki is offered in hospitals and other healthcare settings as supportive care for patients undergoing cancer treatment, pain management, and before and after surgery.

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Reiki for a Cause – Community Reiki Shares are held ‘first Tuesdays. Each month, a charity is selected to receive a portion of the proceeds (net proceeds up to 100%.) Charities that have been selected through the years have included those on Cape Ann (Cape Ann Animal Aid, Wellspring, SeniorCare Inc. Open Door,) the North Shore (Beverly Bootstraps, Reid’s Ride,) individuals and families in need, and charitable causes abroad.

This month’s designee is Family Promise North Shore Boston. Hear what our Reiki Colleague, Carol B had to say about Family Promise

“Family Promise North Shore Boston is a nonprofit interfaith hospitality network that provides temporary shelter, meals, hospitality, and case management for families experiencing homelessness on the North Shore.
Family Promise FPNSB-about250
Family Promise North Shore Boston began serving homeless families in May of 2013. They bring together existing community resources and volunteers in order to further their mission of housing families, keeping families together, and helping them get back on their feet. There currently are thirteen local churches who for 4 weeks each year open their doors and provide a place to stay, food and warm hospitality.
In addition to the dedicated staff who work with families around locating affordable housing, finding jobs, budgeting resources, and parenting skills, there are about 50 volunteers each week who stay overnight with the guests, play with the children, and open their hearts in support of these families.
Each person truly makes difference and the giving and receiving from the heart goes both ways.”   ~ Carol B. of Family Promise North Shore Boston

October Community Reiki Share to Help Support Children in Africa

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind & Spirit

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind & Spirit

Tuesday. October 6th. ‘Community Reiki Share’ in Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Join us in Supporting the Kangemi Charity and Children of Nairobi, Kenya. Having just returned from a sabbatical in Africa, it seems appropriate that this month’s Reiki Share is donating proceeds to an African charity.  All are welcomed to attend to enjoy a Reiki Session while supporting this worthy cause!

This month’s choice of charities was inspired by Advanced Western and Japanese Reiki Practitioner (Komyo Okuden/3rd Degree) and FOB Suzanne Sweeney, owner of Energize Body and Mind here in Gloucester. Suzanne’s mother-in-law Prafulla Ganatraa, coordinates the Kangemi Charity in Kenya, helping to feed, clothe and educate children in an impoverished area of Nairobi.

Kangemi Charity Kenya

Reiki Teacher Prafulla Ganatraa helping children in Nairobi, Kenya

Suzanne’s husband Mehul Ganatra had this to say about The Kangemi Charity this is a grass-roots charity started by my mother (a Reiki master) and a few of her Reiki friends three and a half years ago. The goal is to feed the children of the Kangemi slums (located in Nairobi, Kenya). The slums have a population of about 120,000 with no access to basic facilities (e.g. sewerage, medical). What started out with feeding 50 kids every Sunday has now grown to over 300! In addition to one meal a week, they also occasionally provide some clothing (school uniforms) and blankets. Thanks to some generous donations, the charity now pays the school tuition for 74 kids in primary school and 3 students in secondary school. There is definitely a need to do more. Please note that 100% of the donations my mother receives go towards helping the kids.”

In her efforts to help the children, Prafulla Ganatraa is also teaching them Reiki, demonstrated in this photo. Join us in helping support the wonderful work she is doing!

In memory – This year we dedicate the ‘Wellness Tent’ in honor and memory of Tina Ketchopulos, FOB and beloved friend, loved by many and missed by all who knew her. Tina first invited me to take part in this fundraiser in 2011, for which I am most grateful. ‘Motivated by Love. Guided by Spirit.’  Why They Ride – to continue Reid’s Dream to end cancer.

AYA Facts:

  • Every 7 minutes an AYA is diagnosed with cancer in the U.S.
  • Cancer is the #1 disease related cause of death among AYA
  • Clinical trials are one of the most important tools for bringing improved and new therapies to cancer patients, but there haven’t been enough clinical trials for AYA cancer patients to make any meaningful progress in survival rate.
