The drivers seat…

The drivers seat…

Taking control and being in the drivers seat can be scary.

We think the seas could get rough if we head out and explore so we play it safe and stay on land. Which is what we have been doing but can’t find our way to finding our true self.

Look closely, the sea is calm, the breeze but just a whisper and the sun is our compass.

You don’t need a boat to take control and leave the safety of land…you just need yourself. It’s called mediation.

So climb into your boat and head towards the sun, slowly, calmly with a smile on your face, and close your eyes. Oh and don’t forget to bring your breath along…inhale…exhale…repeat.

Learn ACROYOGA in Gloucester this Weekend!

Learn ACROYOGA in Gloucester this Weekend!

acro

We are excited to bring out old friend Brian Lam to Gloucester for TWO fun trainings this Sunday, May 6. You can do either training, or really treat yourself and do both! You can come alone or bring friends, there will be plenty of great people to work with.

$45 each, $75 for both

INTRO TO ACROBATICS 11:00AM-1:00PM

Using time-tested acrobatic training techniques, students will learn skills that enhance their personal inversion practice, before learning how to incorporate acrobatics in partner work. Students will learn how to combine basic flying positions with inversions to create dynamic flying flows. Brian will demonstrate techniques for bases, flyers and spotters that will keep the flying safe, supported, and fun. This workshop will begin with acrobatic training techniques, building into progressions and foundations for Partner Acrobatics. We will then move into creative expression and refinement with Acrobatic flying transitions. No previous AcroYoga experience is required, although a familiarity and comfort with a supported handstand is recommended.

THERAPEUTICS AND THAI MASSAGE 2:00PM-4:00PM

Therapeutic flying and Thai Massage are the practices that hone an AcroYogi’s ability to be sensitive and receptive. The flow of basing and flying, giving and receiving, honoring and accepting, inhaling and exhaling will take both yogis into a new place of union and bliss. We will use Flying and Thai Massage techniques to provide release to the entire body, the perfect complement to a strong yoga or acrobatics practice. This workshop will enhance the ability to connect deeper with one’s physical touch and being able to read another body, perfect for yoga teachers who want to improve their assisting skills. No previous AcroYoga experience is required, although a regular yoga practice is recommended.

Digestion starts on your tongue…

Digestion starts on your tongue…

It is important to chew food adequately. Chewing is the first stage of digestion and it preps the food for further processing downstairs in the digestive tract.

Ideally, you should chew your food until it becomes liquid – yes that’s right, liquid. This could be anywhere from 20 – 50 bites, depending on: the quantity of food you put in your mouth and the type of food you put in your mouth. (mashed potatoes vs. chicken) Seems impossible – then try taking smaller bites and wait until you have fully swallowed before taking another bite.

Try and take note of the affects it has – if you tend to gulp your food and chew maybe just a few times before swallowing you might be experiencing gas or bloating – so give it a try, your health will thank you.

Pearl Barley w/squash/pomegranate/pistachios

Pearl Barley w/squash/pomegranate/pistachios

Today feels like a good day for one of our favorite recipes…Pearl Barley with Roasted Squash, Pomegranate, and Pistachios. Phew – that is a mouthful

Ingredients
3 Tbs. olive oil, divided
1 cup pearl barley
1 1/2 lb. butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1/2-inch x 1-inch chunks (4 cups)
1 small sweet onion, peeled and finely diced (1 cup)
1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes
2 Tbs. finely chopped parsley
1/2 cup pomegranate seeds
1/3 cup roasted pistachios

Preparation
1. Heat 1 Tbs. oil in medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add barley, and cook 2 to 3 minutes, or until slightly toasted. Pour in 2 1/4 cups water, and bring to a simmer. Cover, reduce heat to low, and cook 45 to 55 minutes, or until liquid is absorbed and grains are cooked. (If barley is not completely cooked, add a little more water and continue simmering until tender.) Pour barley out onto cooking-spray-coated baking sheet, and let cool to room temperature. Season with salt and pepper, if desired.

2. Preheat oven to 425°F. Line second baking sheet with parchment paper, or coat with cooking spray. Toss squash with 1 Tbs. oil on baking sheet until evenly coated, and season with salt and pepper, if desired. Roast 35 to 40 minutes, or until tender, stirring occasionally.

3. Heat remaining 1 Tbs. oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, and cook 7 to 9 minutes, or until translucent. Add red pepper flakes, and cook 1 minute more. Add barley, and cook 3 to 5 minutes, or until warmed through. Stir in roasted squash and parsley, and cook 2 minutes more. Remove from heat; stir in pomegranate seeds and pistachios. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Enjoy!

Spring Awakening Flow and Restore

A Detox Flow and Restore Workshop at Treetop Yoga
“Last year’s Spring Awakening with Kayla and Amy certainly planted many seeds in my soul. This rejuvenating evening inspired so much of what I’ve chosen to do over the past year. I’m so excited to be in the room with these two gentle souls again this year!”
Friday, April 18, 6:30-8:00 PM, Treetop Yoga Studio, 3A Pond Road
Join Amy Varney and Kayla Lemieux for Spring Awakening: A Detoxifying Flow and Restorative Workshop. We will work to clear the body and the mind of dull, stagnant energy as we awaken and energize all of the senses during this ‘seasonal-reset’.
With the arrival of spring, there is a new energy rising within us. In order to gracefully transition from the cold, dark months to the warm, sunny ones, there must also be a shift within our yoga practice. With spring comes added movement, opening, and extroverted energy; an Awakening.

In order to eliminate excess Kapha, which is the dominant dosha of late winter and early spring, there will be an emphasis on using pranayama (breathwork) to ignite internal heat. Utilizing this heat as a catalyst for transformation, you will be guided into a series of detoxifying poses, aimed to boost metabolic, liver and gallbladder function.

Following this flow portion of class, you will be led into a series of restorative poses, harnessing your internal flame yet remaining light, bright and open. With the assistance of bolsters and blankets, we will work to open the heart and chest, prepping the lungs for spring. The restorative practice is a relaxing and refreshing way to release holding patterns within the body and the mind, making space for you to flourish this season.

As you relax into a state of calm, experience the benefits of detoxifying essential oils, gentle assists and Thai Bodywork to help balance the energetic pathways within the body and increase circulation. As you melt into a final state of bliss, savasana will be complete with chilled lavender eye pillows.
