We’re thrilled for the return of summer here on Cape Ann and happy to announce that because of the success of the past two years we are expanding the beloved Yoga on the Harbor class to both Saturday AND Sunday every weekend from Memorial day through Labor Day!

This class is wicked fun, low pressure, and ACCESSIBLE to people of all ages, athletic abilities, and flexibility. Enjoy a beautiful vista of Gloucester Harbor as the sounds, sights, and smells of America’s Oldest Seaport help to ground you and really start your weekend day off with gratitude and presence. It’s a great place to meet other active, healthy, and bright eyed locals.

Be sure to dress appropriately for a morning wake-up on Gloucester’s working waterfront – it never hurts to have a comfortable, larger sweatshirt – you can always take it off! If the weather is foul – we will do our best to announce cancellation of the class an hour in advance on the announcement bar on our website and facebook page.

Class is $15 if you’re just dropping in, and only $10 if you are a member of Maritime Gloucester or have a regular priced unlimited membership at Cape Ann Power Yoga. Mats are available to rent for $5 each. We really encourage you to sign up for a membership at the Museum and support their mission so they can continue to provide the unparalleled programming they do year after year. It’s only $40 for an individual membership and that money goes to ensure that local kids get to learn about every aspect of the ocean and our relationship to it. It’s amazing what this Gloucester institution does and how much of a difference your support makes. 40% of the proceeds from the money we raise with these classes goes directly to Maritime Gloucester and supporting their mission. It’s something we believe in and hope you do too.

Asparagus Risotto ~

Asparagus Risotto ~

Love asparagus?  Here is one of Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC favorite.  Let us know what you think…

Traditonal risotto is made using arborio rice, which is white and glutinous and produces a very creamy rice dish. The trick to making a creamy and tasty brown rice risotto is to use short grain rice and lots of veggie stock.

3/4 cup short grain brown rice
2 cups vegetable or mushroom stock
1 Tbsp each butter (or ghee) and olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 red onion, chopped
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
1 tsp dried basil
1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and chopped
black pepper
grated parmesan or reggiano cheese

In a medium, heavy pot, heat the butter (or ghee) and olive oil.  Add onions, garlic and red pepper flakes, sauteeing until soft. Stir in rice, basil and half the stock. Let simmer covered on medium for 20 minutes, then add remaining stock plus asparagus. Stir well, cover, and let cook until all the liquid is absorbed and rice is creamy (not firm or dry), about another half hour. If needed, cook in another 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup of stock to reach the right consistency. Stir in parmesan to taste and grind in some black pepper. Serves 2.

NOTE: Ayurvedically, cheese is not recommended as it is difficult to digest, but it also purports that black pepper helps make it more digestible.

Great for all doshas. Pittas, omit or minimize garlic, dried basil, and red pepper flakes; Kaphas, omit or reduce butter and oil to 1 tsp each.

Teen Girls emPOWERed Yoga Workshop

Treetop Yoga (3A Pond Rd, Gloucester) welcomes our local teen girls this Sunday for a specialty workshop. Teenage yoga is an excellent way to help your child deal with the overwhelming emotional and physical changes that she goes through during adolescence. This workshop will introduce girls to basic yoga poses and connect the poses through a fun flow. We will also find support from each other with partner poses and games. Finally, there will be a short conversation period to learn how to use either breathing techniques or the yoga practice to help calm the mind when girls face stressful moments in the classroom, on the playing field, or during everyday social interactions. Erin McKay is a former public middle school educator and mom to four children. She is a certified yoga teacher for Treetop Yoga and has received specialty training for kids yoga through Pretzel Kids Yoga and the Baptiste Foundation Unstoppable Program. She teaches tween and teen yoga through the Salem YMCA for the Salem Public Schools and has taught yoga in local Gloucester schools, the Sawyer Free Library, and for local sports teams. Erin has seen the value of yoga for her own children as a supplement to their sports activities and academic demands, but her experience with at risk youth has been most impactful in proving that this practice can offer kids of any age the opportunity to find calm through breath, mindfulness or movement.

Ayurveda believes that lack of proper cellular function, due to imbalance in the Vata, Pitta or Kapha levels are the cause of diseases. Diseases are also caused due to presence of toxins.

Vata governs blinking, breathing, muscle and tissue movement, pulsation of heart, movements of cytoplasm and cell membranes. It promotes creativity and flexibility. When at an imbalance, Vata produces anxiety and fear.

Pitta governs activities such as digestion, absorption, assimilation, metabolism, and nutrition and body temperature. When in proper balance, Pitta promotes intelligence, and on the other hand, when out of balance Pitta triggers hatred, anger and jealousy.

Kapha is the energy that forms the basic structure of the body such as muscles, tendons and bones, and works like glue, holding cells together. Kapha helps in supplying water to all parts of the body, and lubricates joints, moisturizes the skin and maintains immunity. When under imbalance, Kapha could lead to greed, attachment and envy.
