Ayurveda ~

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, also known as Ayurvedic Medicine, is the traditional medicine of India, which originated there over 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda emphasizes re-establishing balance in the body through diet, lifestyle, exercise, and body cleansing, and on the health of the mind, body, and spirit.

In North America, Ayurveda is considered a form of alternative medicine. Like traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda is a whole medical system, meaning that it is based on theories of health and illness and on methods of preventing and treating health conditions.

Because of its growing popularity, Ayurvedic treatments, particularly at spas and salons, are increasingly being performed by people who have not received formal training in Ayurveda. That’s why if you are interested in consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner, it is important to seek a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner and learn about their training.

Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC staff are all certified and proud graduates of Kerala Ayurveda Academy with roots from India as well as Professional Members of National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA).

We look forward to working with you….either virtually or in our office as of June 8 reopening date!

Ancient is the New New…

With chronic disease at epidemic proportions around the world, the need for novel preventive and health-restoring solutions is urgent.

Modern research reveals that dramatic reductions in cardiovascular and other chronic disease is possible through lifestyle intervention, however the knowledge base is fragmented, often inconsistent and insufficient to motivate many patients.

Ayurvedic knowledge offers a powerful added dimension of diagnosis, prevention and care through personalization, chronotherapeutics and medical foods and herbs based on the tridosha system that is appealing to the patient, “makes sense,” and is supported by a growing body of research.

Fall Equinox

Fall Equinox

The Fall Equinox marks the beginning of Autumn and through the lens of #Ayurveda  It marks the beginning of Vata Season. Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC  suggests a few tips for staying balanced through the transition.

Autumn being cool, dry and windy season means that the Vata elements of air, light, dry, rough, subtle and mobile qualities are present.

Your skin may start to feel dry, tight and a bit rough. A Vata imbalance can make you feel fidgety, lack of focus, ungrounded and/or spaced out.

You may experience constipation, bloating, anxiety, joint pain and/or insomnia.

Healthy Living ~

Healthy Living ~

All work no play makes an immune-deficient body.

In Ayurveda, Ojas is our protection, our immunity from disease.

Try a few of these tips from Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC to build up your Ojas…or contact us for a private consultation…

Building your Physical Ojas:

• Eat Seasonally. If we eat what is offered by nature seasonally and without much processing, our ojas will tend to be strong. We will then naturally crave that which is attuned to our constitution (Body type/Dosha).
• Move your breath through your body for 20 minutes upon arising.
• Cleanse or Detox in the Fall and Spring. Ama (undigested foods and experiences that store in our bodies) When Ama is less, ojas is more.
• Eat 2-3 meals a day. Allowing proper time for complete digestion enables ojas to be formed. Eating too frequently creates ama.
• Sip hot water throughout the day. Sipping hot water will clear your channels of ama and refresh the space.

Building Ojas in the Mind Body:

• Meditate Daily. Allowing time and space for the digestion of mental impressions clears the confusion and mental ama (toxins).
• Self-massage with warm oil (sesame) before showering will help to nurture your nerves, which enables ojas to spread throughout you.
• Create space for down time. The feeling of shared joy, laughter and feeling alive, boosts ojas. Make time each day for a dose.

Hold the Ice!

Hold the Ice!

Ayurveda is all about your digestive fires and ice is not your friend.

Think of your digestive fires as a bonfire you are going to cook your food on but you poured water on it first and now the heat of the fire needed to cook the food is gone. Yep – same happens when we drink our beverages with ice!

Spring Barley Risotto ~

Spring Barley Risotto ~

Spring Barley Risotto

Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC loves a healthier alternative to the more traditional arborio risotto rice, barley adds iron and fiber to this fresh take on risotto. One cup of the green peas found in this dish offers more protein than a large egg.

Serves 4
2 Tablespoons oiive oil
1 cup pearled barley
2 leeks, white and green parts only, thinly sliced
½ cup white wind or water
2 cups water
Coarse salt and fresh ground pepper
14 ½ ounces vegetable broth
1 bunch of asparagus (about 1 pound) trimmed and cut in 2 inch pieces
1 box frozen peas defrosted (or fresh)
½ cup fresh grated parmesan

In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add Barley and leeks and cook until it begins to soften about 5 to 7 minutes. Add ½ cup wine or water and cook for another 5 minutes and water starts to evaporate. Add remaining 2 cups of water and bring to boil and season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat and simmer until liquid absorbs, about 10 minutes

Add broth and continue to cook , stirring occasionally until barley is tender and creamy, about 10 minutes. Add asparagus and cook until tender another 5 minutes. Stir in peas until heated through (if using fresh cook throughly), Add parmesan and mint and season with salt and pepper. Enjoy!

Curried Apple and Celery Soup ~

Curried Apple and Celery Soup ~

Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC loves the following spring soup recipe, so yummy and it’s good for your digestion too!

Curried Apple and Celery Soup Recipe

Ingredients
(4 servings)
2 Stalks Celery, roughly chopped
2 Green Apples, peeled and roughly chopped
1/2 cup Milk
1/2-cup Vegetable stock, or water
1/2 teaspoon Cumin powder
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon Powder
Salt and Pepper, to taste

To begin making the Apple Celery Soup, melt the butter in a saucepan. Add in the chopped celery root and the apples.

Sprinkle some salt and sauté until the celery and the apple turn a little soft.

Keep the saucepan partially covered so the steam that gets generated helps them to cook faster.

Stir in the remaining ingredients and add it to the blender. If you don’t have a blender that can’t take in heat, then wait for the mixture to cool before you can blend it.

Blend the apple celery soup mixture in the blender until smooth.

Pour the soup back into the saucepan and check for the salt and pepper levels. Adjust to suit your taste.

When you are ready to serve the soup, give the soup a quick boil

Enjoy!
