Diet of the Mind

Diet of the Mind

#Ayurveda describes sleep as the “diet of the mind”.

Our bodies metabolize waste products mostly after 10:00pm and the immune system needs to revitalize itself between 11:00 pm and 2:00am, so it’s critical to be asleep during these hours.

Here are a few tips for a restful sleep:

* Be in bed by 10pm
* No electronics in the bedroom
* Avoid caffeine late in the day
* Try some deep breathing exercises before bed
* Take a warm bath
* Cooler bedrooms make for a better nights sleep

Contact Ayurveda Wellness Healing if you have difficulties falling asleep, wake during the night or sleep so heavy that it’s hard to wake up – as these are all signs of an imbalance. During a private consultation we can determine where the imbalance lies.

As we transition into the Spring season. It is important to strengthen the body and mind and immune system.

Food Combining

Food Combining

Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC knows the effects poor food combining can have on the digestive system. It can produce indigestion, fermentation and gas formation and if prolonged, can lead to toxemia and disease.

A few examples:
Eating raw and cooked foods together
Bananas and Milk
Berries and Dairy

Spices and herbs are often added in Ayurvedic cooking to help make foods more compatible or to ease undesirable effects.

One example: adding cooling cilantro to hot spicy food can help it to be digested.

Stargazing ~

Stargazing ~

How often do you look up at the night sky?

One Vedic text declares that the entire universe is contained inside ones heart.

Feeling down? Try looking up at the night sky tonight…when looking at the stars it re-connects us with the universe.

Looking up is uplifting, as it raises ones sternum and chin, allowing the rib cage to open and our lungs to expand. This is so key as most of us look down at computers, electronic gadgets, our feet while we walk, and reading.

So give it a try tonight, step away from the TV, your phone or anything else that can wait…and let stargazing ignite hope, dreams and a sense of wonder.

Black Pepper

Black Pepper

Black Pepper = heat

Through the lens of Ayurveda, the heating and pungent properties of black pepper work to help metabolize food as it is digested in our system. The stimulating quality is also used to clear congestion in the respiratory system as well as other processes.

Choose organically grown black pepper associated with a fair trade cooperative is highly preferable to conventional pepper.

Black Pepper Aids Digestion through the lens of Ayurveda in rekindling agni, (digestive fire)

Black Pepper is an Antioxidant and helps in cold and flu remedies. Black pepper and honey is a traditional Ayurvedic approach to respiratory congestion, helping to expectorate and dry up mucus membranes (Frawley, 1986). In Western herbalism, it is used in antiseptic cold and flu preventatives like fire cider.

Pepper has cleansing and antioxidant properties, and helps to transport the benefits of any other herbs to the different parts of the body.

Black pepper is a warming spice and has a pungent taste. It is terrific for pacifying Kapha, and just a little bit helps pacify Vata. Black pepper should be used in moderation as it does increase Pitta.

Share with us how you use Black Pepper in your diet.
