Dessert First?

Dessert First?

Do you eat your dessert first? What??

Yes, through the lens of Ayurveda foods in a meal be eaten in sequential order by their tastes and all six states should be represented while eating. By eating the tastes in order this corresponds to the digestive order. So, sweet tastes should be eaten first i.e. bread, desserts, rice, wheat, barley, corn etc. followed by sour taste i.e. pickle chutney, tamarind, lemon, tomato, etc.; followed by salty, pungent, bitter and last but not least astringent…phew

So you say, what again…I am so confused and how could I possibly do this? Here’s a rule of thumb: Eat your bread, rice or sweets first, then a sour tasting appetizer, followed by the main meal and finish with a salad which is astringent in taste! Or if that is just not always possible you can cook with or carry with you our Six Taste spice mix. At Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC we like to say “Digestion in a bottle

Ama = Toxins

Ama = Toxins

Do you have a coating on your tongue or feeling tired all the time? Through the lens of Ayurveda – these are a few signs of Ama (toxins). Toxins clog the canals in our bodies.

Ayurveda offers ways to cleanse the body of Ama (toxins) but it’s always better to prevent if from forming in the first place.

Ask yourself when you eat the biggest meal of the day? If you answered “dinner” you are helping to create Ama. Eating a large, heavy meal in the evening is the single, target and most common mistake that the majority of us make, especially in the Western world…and if you are over 50 years of age this is even more problematic as your metabolism and digestion become slower.

So start today and make “lunch” (12-2pm) your biggest meal of the day.

Let us know how you do.

If you’d like to get on the road to removing the already built up Ama (toxins) join Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC upcoming Ayurvedic Spring Cleanse…if not now, when?

Winter Solstice ~

Winter Solstice ~

Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC welcomes the Winter Solstice…

We are all deeply affected by the change of seasons, even if we often don’t notice or acknowledge it. It can affect us in so many ways, from our mood, to our energy levels and even our health and wellbeing.

We experience internal changes. These include craving heavier food, sluggish digestion, drier skin, a need for more hydration, feelings of sadness, melancholy and lethargy, and a desire to spend more time indoors and sleeping. These are all signs that we are out of balance. With some care and fundamental practices we can overcome these imbalances.

Knowing how to best support ourselves during these pivotal seasonal shifts is invaluable to our immunity and overall health. With mindfulness and the science of yoga, meditation and Ayurveda, we can nourish our bodies and minds and easily flow with these seasonal shifts.

Through the lens of Ayurveda, winter doesn’t need to be the ‘cold and flu season’, but rather a season to improve immunity – not only in the physical, but also in psychological and spiritual. Immunity is connected with digestion. When digestion is strong and the appetite is good, immunity is strengthened.

Minimize your intake of foods such as raw vegetables, salad greens and cold drinks. Think indoors, by the fire or under a warm blanket, eating warm, slow-cooked nourishing meals.

Here are a few tips:

* Ensure adequate sleep, with six to eight hours a night being the ideal. Avoid over sleeping, as this will promote sluggishness in the body

*Use pure essential oil to clear the air. Eucalyptus oil aids breathing and helps release congestion

*Get your daily dose of sunlight – take walks, gaze at the sun

* Tell the people you love that you love them, give hugs, and bring family, friends and communities together.

Fall Colors to stay balanced ~

Fall Colors to stay balanced ~

Fall Colors

The days are getting shorter and the air cooler and dryer.

Autumn is a time when Agni (digestive fire) has begun cooling off. Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC knows the importance colors play in balancing the body. According to #Ayurveda, everything in the universe is energetic and gives off a vibration, colors too!

Since #autumn is a cooler season, one can balance this climate by wearing warmer rich hues…like yellows, oranges and reds.

Take a look at the fall colors in nature…to stay in balance one must live in harmony with nature.

Bedtime Routine~

Bedtime Routine~

How’s your sleep? Do you have a bedtime routine that is helping or hurting you from a good nights rest?

Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC encourages you to embrace an Ayurvedic Bedtime Routine by being in bed by 10pm.
To make that happen:

Turn off the TV at least an hour before bed.

Resist online anything—shopping, Twitter, Facebook, news gathering, or working.

Use that extra hour for self-reflection, journaling, restorative yoga, or meditation.

Treat yourself to a foot massage. Rub lavender-scented warm sesame oil on your feet and pull on a pair of old socks.

Put on your favorite deep relaxation CD or yoga nidra CD (earlier in the day) to help you practice resting and to take the edge off the nervous system. Doing yoga nidra too close to bedtime could refresh your energy instead of moving you into deep sleep.

Make yourself some warm milk laced with special sleep-inducing herbs. Pour 4 to 6 ounces of milk (organic) into a saucepan, along with a pinch or two of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, and saffron, and a teaspoon of ghee, and simmer for about three minutes. Remove from the heat and let set for a minute or so. Add raw honey to taste—either more than or less than a teaspoon. Bottoms up!

Lights out

Squash Pancakes ~

Squash Pancakes ~

Looking for something to try for lunch or dinner? Fall is a perfect time of year to eat root veggies. So let’s get creative and bring a breakfast staple into the day

Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC loves Squash Pancakes as they are easy to make help us to stay balanced in the dryness of Fall and Winter.

Squash Pancake
Prep: 20 min
Cooking time: 5 min
Cooking Tip: Cook the pancake on a cast iron pan – it won’t stick.

Ingredients:
1 c rice flour
1/4 c cream of rice
1 medium piece of squash
3 tbsp olive oil
1/4 c of grated coconut
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 to 1 c of water
2 tbsp of chopped cilantro

Wash the squash and grate it.
In a large mixing bowl mix rice, cream of rice, grated squash, grated coconut, cilantro, salt and 1 tbsp oil. Mix all the ingredients very well. Add water to make a thick batter. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Heat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick frying pan. With your hands, take some batter and place it on the pan. With repeated strokes, using your fingers spread the batter into 3/4 cm thick round pancake. Cook for two minutes. Flip the pancake over and cook for another three minutes.

Serve warm…add some chutney on top or eat as is and add some warm arugula or spinach as a side. Enjoy!
