October, Ayurveda Awareness Month

October, Ayurveda Awareness Month

Ayurveda is a natural system of health and wellbeing and the sister-science to yoga. It originated in India thousands of years ago.

As a Complementary and Alternative Medicine Ayurveda can support your health needs in various ways. Ayurveda uses diet, herbal remedies, lifestyle tools and body therapies to establish health in body and mind.

Like Chinese medicine, Ayurveda is based on the five elements of nature. They are earth, air, fire, water and ether. According to Ayurveda, these elements are present in our environment around us as well as within us.

Good health is a state of balance of these five elements. Maintaining balance is the key and that involves many things. Your diet, lifestyle, relationships and habitat are all factors which can affect your natural state of balance. If you know your body type you can create a healthy lifestyle and greater well being.

Discover Your Body Type
In Ayurveda the five elements are organized into three fundamental principles called doshas. The three doshas are vata dosha, pitta dosha and kapha dosha. Each of us are composed of some combination of these three doshas.

Doshas govern the various processes of the body and mind. They create your uniqueness. With some knowledge of the doshas you can begin to track your state of health or your level of balance. Maintain a balance of the doshas to maintain health and prevent future illness from occurring.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2015 survey reported in the U.S. (1) –

  • 37.9% of adults age 20 years and over are obese (2013-2014)
  • 70.7%  adults age 20 years and over with overweight, including obesity (2013-2014)

Weight loss and weight management can be complex. A collaborative approach may offer best outcomes. Talk to your physician about healthy ways to reduce and manage weight. If you have trouble getting started or staying focused and motivated on healthy eating and exercise behaviors, hypnosis may be a helpful adjunct.

The American Psychology Association Defines Hypnosis as –  “A state of consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion.” (2)

Hypnosis as Adjunctive Therapy for Healthy Weight – Combined with conventional nutritional counseling and/or cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis may make it easer for you to attain and maintain a healthy weight. (3)

Complementary Therapies for Obesity – “Although many complementary therapies are promoted for the treatment of obesity, few are truly therapeutic. Evidence suggests acupuncture, and hypnosis are the only evidence-based complementary therapies for the treatment of obesity, and, at best, these should be used as adjuncts to the more conventional therapies of calorie restriction and exercise.” (4)

Introducing Cape Ann Power Yoga!

Change your life. Today.  cape+ann+power+yoga

Cape Ann Power Yoga is now open in Brown’s Mall in Downtown Gloucester. We teach Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga in a clean and heated (90-95 degrees) room with a view to the sky and out to the harbor. When you come to class you can expect to breathe, move, sweat, work, stretch, and let go of things that you have been holding on to. You can expect to be challenged – and that means that you’re getting stronger and actually improving yourself, not just thinking or talking about it. You’ll be practicing next to construction workers, secretaries, veterans, yoga teachers, mountain bikers, surfers, runners, weightlifters, teenagers, octogenarians, and a guy named Dirt.

jeffdavedirt

That’s Dirt on the right. He loves power yoga.

Our teachers are all well trained to give inspiration to experienced yoga practitioners and guidance to beginners. Power yoga is safe, fun, and challenging. If you practice a lot it will change your life – which is why every class is only $10. We want you to come and practice, a lot. In just over a month of being open we can see bodies transforming, minds opening, and lives changing. Imagine what this practice can do for you.
